Summer hours: The OLLI office will be open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. during the summer.

 

Summer classes begin next week!  It’s not too late to register. Pick up a brochure in the office, and a few more to share with friends and neighbors.  Summer is a great time to try OLLI for the first time.  Classes are just $30 and there is no membership requirement.

 

DEADLINE JUNE 6!  Applications are being accepted for Class 3 of Senior Leaders Greenville. Senior Leaders Greenville (SLG) builds awareness of the essential role of seniors in the community and the critical issues they face, empowering participants to become advocates seeking better lives for seniors in Greenville, the Upstate, and beyond. SLG begins with an Orientation in August, concludes with a graduation luncheon in May, and includes nine day-long sessions with speakers, group activities, and exercises that will inform you on topics relevant to seniors. After previous Straight Talk SC lectures, attendees have asked “How can I make a difference?” in regard to a particular issue.  This summer’s series will answer that question, at least in the area of education.  REGISTER NOW FOR Straight Talk SC, which starts Tuesday, June 7.  This year’s topic is Education for Life:  Working together to fulfill the promise of education.  Learn about what is essential for successful student outcomes and how communities are responding to the challenges faced by many.  You’ll hear from many distinguished speakers, including former SC Governor and former US Secretary of Education Dick Riley.  Tuesday evenings, June 7, 14, and 21, 6:30-8:30 at Younts Conference Center on Furman’s campus.  For more information about the program and to register, visit the Riley Institute website.  You may also register in the OLLI Office. OLLI HAPPENINGS

2016 Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival and OLLI Bonus Event. This very popular Festival is returning to the Greenville Fine Arts Center for its second time in 46 years! Sold out last season, it will present 5 separate programs on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning June 27 – July 25. Call 828.771.1305 to order tickets or purchase them at the door.

As a festival lead in, don’t miss the Bonus Event on Friday, July 17 from 10 a.m. – noon, HC110. At this FREE entertaining and educational lecture, Dennis Tavernetti and Beth Lee will present an overview of the composers, performers and the music of the Festival.  Sign-up in the OLLI office!

 

The knitters who meet on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 12 noon are looking for volunteers to help make “Knitted Knockers,” for breast cancer patients who have not had reconstruction surgery. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

WHAT’S CALLING YOU NOW?  As members of the Furman family, OLLI members are cordially invited to sign up for a biennial on-campus retreat for Furman alumni and friends, sponsored by the Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection and held on July 21-24, 2016.  Come ponder your sense of calling, past and present, while hearing from and talking with Furman faculty (including OLLI prof David Bost), participating in small-group workshops, and enjoying delicious meals and engaging conversation with Furman alumni and friends.  The cost for local participants (those not staying overnight on campus) is $200, with sign-up deadline on June 1.  For more information, email Rolyn Rollins and/or check out the retreat brochure here .

 

Furman Dining Services has begun the transition from Aramark to Bon Appetit. Because of this, the Dining Hall will be closed from until June 5. The Dining Hall will reopen for the rest of summer on June 6 operating on the following schedule: Breakfast: 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.; Lunch: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Dinner: 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

 

The Music by the Lake Concert Series has officially begun! The concerts will be held weekly on Thursdays at 7:30pm at the amphitheater on the lake. This week on June 9, enjoy “Music from Far and Away” featuring the Poinsett Wind Symphony. Check out this link for an entire schedule of the summer concerts.

 

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

Meals on Wheels needs delivery volunteers! Meals can be picked up at the Oregon Street location or at drop off sites in Fountain Inn, Piedmont, Simpsonville, Taylors or Travelers Rest. Travelers Rest Artist Alliance announces a “Call for Artists Applications” for the 5th annual Art on the Trail, a juried event that presents fine arts, sculpture, fibers arts, upcycled arts, and musical and theater performances.
