Surviving Sorority Recruitment

Judging from the overabundance of Greek letters and throw-what-you-know pics on Facebook, it’s that time of the year again: SORORITY RECRUITMENT. Sorority recruitment was probably one of the most stressful experiences that I have ever had, aside from the college admission process; however, it was also one of the most rewarding experiences, for I have enjoyed every second of being a sorority woman on Furman’s campus. That said, sorority recruitment does not have to be stressful. Here are a few tips on how to survive recruitment:

1. Go in with an open mind. Seriously. You may think that XYZ is meant for you, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give ABC a chance! ABC may be the perfect match for you; however, you won’t know unless you give it a try.
2. DO NOT- I repeat- DO NOT pay attention to sorority stereotypes. They mean absolutely nothing, especially on a campus so diverse as Furman’s. Also, the sororities’ reputations have already changed this year from what they were last year. Go with your heart, not with the words of others.
3. Prepare to have your heart broken… and then pieced back together again. It is possible that you will not be asked back to your favorite sorority. It’s ok to be upset; however, it is important that you pick yourself back up and enjoy the rest of recruitment with the other amazing girls whom you have yet to meet and get to know. Give it one day, and I guarantee that you will have already fallen in love with another sorority.
4. Talk to your Pi Chis. Listen to your Pi Chis. That’s what they’re there for. Tough decision? Meet up with your Pi Chi and discuss the pros and cons of each option. She’s been through this before and a second opinion is always great to have!
5. Relax and have a good time. Recruitment is meant to be a FUN experience! Also, get ready to meet your new sisters! Believe me when I say that we are about ten times as excited as you are!!!
