The OLLI Office will be closed (no classes) on April 14 in observance of Good Friday.

We will be OPEN and holding classes on Monday, April 17.

 

Term fees are refundable through the end of the second week of classes (except for cooking classes). After the end of the second week (TODAY Friday, April 7), no refunds will be given. An administrative charge of $10 will apply to any course cancellations. There is no fee if you drop a class and add a different one.

 

Ever needed to come into the office and drop a class? Get directions? Register? Make a reservation? Get help with wi-fi? If so, you likely interacted with our student workers and we trust you will agree that we have the crème of the crop in Sam Hayes, Laken Weaver and Sam Kolls.  April 10-14 is Furman Student Worker Appreciation Week. Please help us show our OLLI appreciation by stopping to say thanks, jotting a note or the like sometime when at the Herring Center next week. We couldn’t do it without them!

An OLLI Computer Help Desk will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 1 – 4:30 p.m., HC104 (the computer lab). If you are having trouble with your PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, other smartphone, or any computer-related question or problem, bring it by and we will look at it for you. Help will be on a “first come, first served” basis. If you have an afternoon class, you can drop off your laptop and we’ll look at it as time permits. Drop by during the afternoon of the 18th and get your computer questions or problems looked at by our experts.

 

The OLLI Onstage SIG meets this Monday, April 10 from 12:20-1:20 in HC 103, President’s Conference Room. Everyone interested is welcome! We want your input.
OLLI Out and About Singles are going to Ram Cat Alley in Seneca, SC on Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. to hear the Soul and R&B singer, Jaimie Wright, and her band.  For reservations please contact Carolyn Rice.

 

Interested in volunteering in the community but not sure where to start? Join the Community Volunteer SIG on Thurs., April 20, 12:20 – 1:20 p.m., HC004 to learn more about more than 40 opportunities. This week’s special focus will be on Loaves & Fishes and American Red Cross.

The OLLI Travel SIG will meet Fri., April 21, 4:30 pm at the Evergreen Lounge, Woodlands of Furman. Beer and wine are available (please DON’T bring your own) but you might bring an appetizer to share. Our speaker will give advice about packing for a trip, interesting even for those with lots of experience–there are always new opportunities for efficiency.  There will be time for general discussion, networking for ideas and camaraderie.

 

Out and About SIG, mark your calendars for Thur., May 4 for a day of antiquing in Landrum, SC. Meander through the antique stores and boutiques, lunch at the Hare and Hound and for those interested we can swing by Campbell’s Covered Bridge which is nearby.  We will carpool from Furman leaving at 9:15 am.  Please RSVP to Jan Tallman, 864.423.1287 by April 20 so lunch reservations can be made.

 

French SIG: Ce semestre le SIG français deviendra un club du livre. Nous lirons un livre français et l’utiliserons comme point de départ pour notre discussion.  Nous commencerons avec  “Le Rhinocéros, ” un livre de E. Ionesco. Vous pouvez acheter l’édition française en ligne à Amazon. Nous accueillerons les personnes qui ont des notions de français, parlé ou écrit. Le SIG se réunira les mardis  au centre Herring de 12:20 à 13:20, salle 103.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Tonight, April 7, the Furman Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Leslie W. Hicken, will present their annual Spring Concert, “Lift Off” at 8:00 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through Eventbrite (a small processing fee applies), at the door or through the Furman Music Office, 294-2118.

 

Furman Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos in concert Tues., April 11, 8 p.m., Daniel Recital. Tickets $5.

 

The Riley Institute and the Department of Politics and International Affairs present a two-day symposium, Safe and Free? Civil Liberties and the Fight for National Security, April 10 and 11, 7 – 8:45 p.m., in McAlister Auditorium.  Free and open to the public. This is a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from ten national experts, including Lt. Gen. Jessica Taylor, Lead Political Reporter, National Public Radio, will talk about the political climate in the nation’s capital and what it’s like to be a member on the Fourth Estate during the Trump presidency at the University’s High Noon Lecture Series on Wed., April 12 at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman. The lecture, Media in the Age of Trump, will begin at noon and is open to the public. View the schedule here.

 

Distinguished Visiting Professor of Violin at Furman University William Preucil and guest artists will present a concert, “William Preucil & Friends” on Wednesday, April 12 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall.  Free!

 

Furman Steering Committee for BMW Charity Pro-Am needs your help! The Furman Golf Club is one of 3 courses hosting the BMW Charity Pro-Am in Greenville May 18-21. The Greenville Chorale, conducted by OLLI instructor Bing Vick, presents a concert of great American secular music, “Slice of American Pie”, on Sunday, April 23, 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Greenville and on Sunday, April 30, 3:00 p.m. at Taylors First Baptist Church. Beautiful folksongs, stirring hymn-tunes, spirituals, gospel music, Barbershop harmony, and selections from the “Great American Songbook” (20’s, 30’s, 40’s.)
