Term fees are refundable through the end of the second week of classes (except for cooking classes). After the end of the second week (end of day Friday, April 7), no refunds will be given. An administrative charge of $10 will apply to any course cancellations. There is no fee if you drop a class and add a different one.

 

Furman Steering Committee for BMW Charity Pro-Am needs your help! As you may know, the Furman Golf Club is one of three courses hosting the BMW Charity Pro-Am that will take place in Greenville May 18-21. Organizers are looking for volunteers to work during the tournament. The cost for volunteering is $40, and includes a polo shirt and cap, food and beverages, and one guest pass good at any of the three courses. Register to volunteer and learn more about the positions available at the tournament website. $20 of the volunteer fee can be directed to one of 16 charities. OLLI HAPPENINGS

 

FREE OLD AND UNUSED DRUG DISPOSAL! Today, March 31 noon-2 p.m., OLLI will host a special one-time-only FREE service to dispose of all old or unused drugs.  Spring clean your medicine cabinet and drop off your pill bottles, tubes, vials, syringes, etc. with the law enforcement official who will be at the Herring Center front door. No need to remove labels.

 

Lunch and Learn, Tuesdays in HC110, 12:30-1:15p.m. April 4, Spine Care: Operative and Nonoperative Treatment Options with Dr. Eric Andrew Lenehan, Department of Orthopedics and Neurosurgery, Southeast Neurological and Spine Institute, Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.

 

In just a short time, 50 OLLI members have become actively engaged with the Personal and Community Engagement Initiative (PCE).  The first Community Engagement SIG is on April 6, 12:20 – 1:20 p.m. (HC004) Learn about the opportunities and some of the reasons these folks have chosen to participate. Come listen to an informative presentation by Dudley Tower and Tom Nowlin and then decide for yourself.  You may be VERY surprised at some of the hidden benefits of volunteering.

A Hand Quilting and More SIG is forming for all OLLI members interested in sharing time working on hand quilting projects or any other hand work you are involved in. The SIG will meet on Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m., HC003. Contact Donna Rasheed or Judith Woodward with questions.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

 

The New York Times best-selling author David Shields will talk about the film, I Think You’re Totally Wrong: A Quarrel, which is based on Shields’ same-titled book and is directed by filmmaker actor James Franco. The film talk takes place Friday, March 31 at 4 p.m. in Burgiss Theater. Free!

 

Brent Nelsen, Professor of Politics and International Affairs, Furman University, will open with a brief examination of what has transpired to date, then open the floor to a broad-ranging discussion about the first tumultuous weeks of the Trump presidency at the University’s High Noon Lecture Series on Wed., April 5 at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman. The lecture, “The First 76 Days: A Look at the Trump Presidency”, will begin at noon and is open to the public. View the spring schedule here.

 

Furman Theatre presents Romeo and Juliet, March 29-April 1 and 6-8 at 8 p.m., and April 2 and 9 at 3 p.m. OLLI members get the student price.  Call 294-2125 for more information.

 

Indiana University Bloomington Professor of Political Science Aurelian Craiutu will speak on Wednesday, April 5, at 5 p.m. in Johns Hall 101. His talk, “Moderation: A Virtue for Our Times,” is free and open to the public. Craiutu’s lecture is the last of the three-part Tocqueville series, “Tocqueville and the American Republic.”

 

On Friday evening April 7, the Furman Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Leslie W. Hicken, will present their annual Spring Concert, “Lift Off” at 8:00 pm in McAlister Auditorium.  This concert is part of Furman’s Sound Quality Series. Admission is $10 for seniors and can be purchased through Eventbrite (a small processing fee applies), at the door or through the Furman Music Office, 294-2118.

 

Furman University’s Riley Institute and Department of Politics and International Affairs will present a two-day symposium on national security and civil liberties on April 10 & 11, 7 – 8:45 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The symposium, “Safe and Free? Civil Liberties and the Fight for National Security,” is free and open to the public. On April 10, Lt. Gen. John Mulholland (U.S. Army, ret.), former commander of special forces and CIA associate director for military affairs will speak on “America’s Current and Future National Security Challenges.” On April 11, Adm. Mike McConnell (U.S. Navy, ret.), former U.S. Director of National Intelligence and former head of the National Security Agency will present the case for government surveillance. What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

 

The Warehouse Theatre presents Arthur Miller’s All My Sons through April 15. The March 24, 25, 30, 31 and April 1, 6, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15 performances will be at 3 p.m. The April 7 performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $35 for reserved.
