The OLLI Office will be closed (no classes) on April 14 in observance of Good Friday.

We will be OPEN and holding classes on Monday, April 17.

 

On April 19 Furman will host the Special Olympics. Our parking lot will be full.  We are moving many of the morning OLLI courses to other locations that day (list follows).  If your class is NOT on this list, you will have class in the Herring Center as usual. A limited number of parking spaces will be reserved for OLLI class participants in front of the Herring Center. All others should enter campus through the front gate, as you will not be able to access the main campus from our parking lot that morning. Please call the OLLI office with any questions, If you need to come by to take care of something in the office, April 19 would not be the day to do that.  Thank you for your patience and support as Furman hosts these special athletes!

All Wednesday 1:30 p.m. classes will begin at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 only, with the exception of HIS685 Interesting Characters in American History and Woodcarving 201, which will meet at their regular time.

OLLI Out and About Singles are going to Ram Cat Alley in Seneca, SC on Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. to hear the Soul and R&B singer, Jaimie Wright, and her band.  For reservations please contact Carolyn Rice.

 

Interested in volunteering in the community but not sure where to start? Join the Community Volunteer SIG on Thurs., April 20, 12:20 – 1:20 p.m., HC004 to learn more about more than 40 opportunities. This week’s special focus will be on Loaves & Fishes and the American Red Cross.

 

The OLLI Travel SIG will meet Fri., April 21, 4:30 pm at the Evergreen Lounge, Woodlands of Furman. Beer and wine are available (please DON’T bring your own) but you might bring an appetizer to share. Our speaker will give advice about packing for a trip, interesting even for those with lots of experience–there are always new opportunities for efficiency.  There will be time for general discussion, networking for ideas and camaraderie.

 

Out and About SIG, mark your calendars for Thur., May 4 for a day of antiquing in Landrum, SC. Meander through the antique stores and boutiques, lunch at the Hare and Hound and for those interested we can swing by Campbell’s Covered Bridge which is nearby.  We will carpool from Furman leaving at 9:15 am.  Please RSVP to Jan Tallman, 864.423.1187 by April 20 so lunch reservations can be made.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Part 3 of “Our Republic…..For Which It Stands,” a panel discussion presented by Furman University professors, takes place this week.  Wednesday, April 19, Think You Know What You Know?  Understanding Constraints on Human Perception and Reasoning, 7 p.m., Daniel Recital Hall.  April 20, Seeing the Science in Our lIves:  The Value of Basic and Applied Research, Daniel Recital Hall.  Both events are free and open to the public.

 

The Furman Symphony Orchestra and Oratorio Chorus will present a concert Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The Spring Oratorio, Mozart & Strauss, is a Sound Quality Concert Series event. Tickets are $10 for seniors and may be purchased at the door or ordered through Eventbrite, at the door or through the Furman Music Office, 294-2118.

 

Art by 14 Furman University graduating seniors will be on display through May 4 in Thompson Gallery of Furman’s Roe Art Building. Thompson Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., M-F.  The exhibition, Passages, is a culmination of the four years the Class of 2017 has studied in the art department. Using a variety of mediums, the artists will show paintings, prints, ceramics, photography, and sculpture.

 

OLLI golfers of every skill level are invited to participate in the Furman Women’s Basketball Golf Tournament, Friday, May 5 at the Furman Golf Club. What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

The Greenville Chorale, conducted by OLLI instructor Bing Vick, presents a concert of great American secular music, “Slice of American Pie,” on Sunday, April 23, 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Greenville and on Sunday, April 30, 3:00 p.m. at Taylors First Baptist Church. Beautiful folksongs, stirring hymn-tunes, spirituals, gospel music, Barbershop harmony, and selections from the “Great American Songbook” (20’s, 30’s, 40’s). OLLI members get 20% discount ($30 ticket for $24) on tickets in the OLLI Office.

 

Greater Greenville Master Gardeners Plant Sale will be held Saturday, April 29 from 8 a.m.—1 p.m. at Jeff Lynch Appliance & TV Center (17 Roper Mountain Road, Greenville.) Rain or Shine!
