The Winter2020 Course Brochure is online HERE. Check out the fantastic courses available this Winter! Printed copies will go in the mail next Friday. Winter registration begins November 12 for course package holders and November 14 for single course purchasers.

Cut down on waste while you keep your beverage piping hot! Purchase one of the newly redesigned OLLI Coffee Mugs. Mugs are available for purchase in the office for $12.

Come enjoy a special event as OLLI welcomes Jim Lavender – Storyteller for an afternoon of stories on Tuesday, November 5, 3:15 p.m., Herring Center Lobby. Coming from a fascinating and colorful “storybook” life, his first-person true narratives are captivating, often hilarious, and memorable. Although Jim is a native of the Mississippi swamp country, he now lives with his wife at their Bear Creek Hollow Farm in the hills of the Virginia hunt country. His stories are written at a 200-year old kitchen table, overlooking the wilderness of Bear Creek Hollow, with deer, turkey, giant red woodpeckers, and the occasional bear wandering beneath the windows. Let us know you will be there by signing up in the OLLI office 864.294.2998.

So, you want to go to Iceland? OLLI @ Furman is doing just that! Please join us for an Information Meeting on a July 2020 Trip to Iceland with Furman Professor, Suresh Muthukrishnan on Friday, November 1 at 10:30 a.m., HC111. Dr. Muthukrishnan will review the itinerary and share a bit about what to expect when traveling to Iceland. If you are unable to attend the meeting, but interested in the trip, please be sure to contact Heidi Wright in the OLLI office to be sure you are on the interest list.

Share your ghoulish or funny Jack-O-Lantern design in the OLLI Carved and Decorated Pumpkin Contest. Deliver pumpkins, faux or real on Mon, Oct 21, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to Manly Lobby. Voting will begin on Tues, Oct 22 ending Fri, Oct 25, Noon. ALL OLLI members are encouraged to vote. We will announce winners and award prizes at the Bunco event. Contact Sally Key with questions!

Only a few spots left for BUNCO at the Herring Center on Fri, Oct 25, 2-4 p.m!! In addition to Bunco, participants will enjoy treat style snacks, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages, along with plenty of laughter! Bunco is a dice game that requires no skill, knowledge or strategy, just pure luck. Tables will change after each round to encourage mingling and meeting new friends, so wear your nametag. PARKING UPDATES
The current OLLI parking sticker is an octagon. If you have not purchased your 2019-20 parking sticker, they are available for $10 in the OLLI office. ****PLEASE NOTE****As the office enters parking information, you may receive an email from Parking@furman.edu. You can IGNORE this automatic email. Once you pay in the OLLI office, you receive your parking decal and do not need anything else. Questions? Contact Alise.

Hi Movie Lovers! The OLLI Movie SIG will meet Monday, Nov.4, 3:15 -4:15, HC 103 to discuss “The Fisher King” (1991) with Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. OLLI and the Furman Department of English are working together to bring two-time National Book Award Winner Jesmyn Ward to campus on February 5, 2020. In preparation, we encourage you to read some of her books. A limited number of copies of “Men We Reaped,” “Salvage the Bones,” and “Sing, Unburied, Sing” are available to borrow in Nancy Kennedy’s office. There will be a discussion of “Sing, Unburied, Sing” on

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?
School Supply Drive. Join the Furman Staff Advisory Committee and the Heller Service Corps in supporting local Title One schools. School supplies are an ongoing need, and your donations of Kleenex, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, colored pencils, crayons, pencils, erasers, filler paper, glue sticks, and scissors will help support many children. There is a drop-off box in the Herring Center lobby until October 23. Thank you for your help!

American Enterprise Institute’s Executive Council at Furman University presents A Conversation about Brexit on October 29 at 5 p.m. in Burgiss Theater, Trone Center. The panel includes Dr. Dalibor Rohac, AEI Scholar; Dr. Brent Nelsen, Furman University professor; and Furman alumnus John Bleed, with the Confederation of British Industry. Open to the public. FREE!

What’s GOING ON Around Greenville?
Greenville Chorale with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and guest soloists Kathryn Knauer, soprano, Elizabeth Bishop, mezzo, Grant Knox, Tenor, and David Parker, bass-baritone in a performance of the Bach “Magnificat in D” and the Mozart “Requiem” on Sat, Oct 19, 8 p.m. at the Peace Center. Bing Vick, OLLI member/instructor, is in his 39th season as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Chorale. Discounted tickets for OLLI members are available in the OLLI Office for $36.

ReUnited with United Way & United Ministries will host a special conversation event with Executive Director, Tony McDade and Director of Programs & Operations, Ethan Friddle about the Greenville nonprofit’s successes and challenges on Wed, Oct. 23 10-12:30 p.m. at 503 Vardry St., Greenville. Along the way, you will take a walking tour, see service in action and get to play problem solver. Take a deep dive into the day-to-day work made possible by United Way’s support of United Ministries. Hear how lives are transformed, individuals are empowered, and personal crises are averted. The Upcountry History Museum Lunchbox Learning on Wed., October 23 @ Noon will feature Jeff Makala, Furman University Special Collections Librarian and Archivist (and OLLI instructor!) with his new book: In Dogs We Trust: An Anthology of American Dog Literature. Adventurous listeners are invited to a special Halloween performance Thurs, October 31,7:30–9 p.m. at the Carolina Music Museum by Optimal Collision, with Peter Dimery on tenor saxophone, Furman professor Dan Koppelman on piano and electronics, and Zachary Pruitt on guitar. Optimal Collision is a collaborative exploration of performance and composition of music drawing from the traditions of free improvisation, avant-garde jazz, and contemporary classical. SCELP Environmental Equity with Upstate Forever will host an event about the effect economic status has on the response to environmental hazards, including the story of the impacts on residents of Greenville’s Southernside neighborhood on Tuesday, Oct 29, 6-8 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church, Greenville. The evening will include a panel of local legal and environmental experts who will present actionable information for our area. Open to the public. Link HERE to register.

Snippet from Sally… Have you noticed the fun autumn decorations in front of the Herring Center? Many thanks to Cathy Dwyer who helps take care of the two big planters there. But more importantly, have you checked out the empty bowls in each arrangement? Well, they won’t be that way for long!!! Starting next week, Cathy traditionally checks often to see that they are filled with OLLI Halloween candy! Be sure to stop by for a treat… you won’t even have to do a trick!!!
