OLLI NOTES September 6, 2019
The OLLI Office is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

If you have already registered, please refer to your confirmation e-mail and note the “class status” for the courses for which you registered (registered, registered not paid, waitlist). For anyone showing a registered not paid status, you are registered for the course and just need to pay for it. **If you have been placed on a waitlist for a class, please know that if a class has spots open, you will receive a call from the office.

The 2019-2020 parking stickers are available! Furman University Police requires that all OLLI members purchase a parking sticker so that cars are registered. This helps ensure your safety and security while you are on campus. Stickers are available in the OLLI office for $10 (check or cash only, please). You will need to provide your name, address, driver’s license number, make, model, and year of car, and tag number. Forms are available in the office, or print one here. Remove previous sticker before attaching new. Contact Alise Brown.

Do you have a current lifeguard certificate? OLLI is always looking for certified lifeguards to help with OLLI classes that meet at the PAC pool. Please contact Alise Brown or call (864)294-2141 if you are interested.
Special OLLI@Furman Tailgate and Football Outing! Come support Furman Football Sat., Sept. 28, @ 11 a.m. Tailgate / 1 p.m. Kick-Off, Furman Paladins VS. ETSU. Game Ticket and Tailgate is $45/pp and includes reserved ticket to the game, southern pregame tailgate on Paladin Green from Tommy’s Ham House, parking pass for the Chapel Lot and a Furman Paladins victory scarf. For those interested, Tailgate Only is $20/pp and includes a southern pregame tailgate on Paladin Green from Tommy’s Ham House. OLLI seating will be in the purple section and Tailgate will be on Paladin Green (the lawn in the middle of campus). This is the perfect way to experience Furman Football! Baiden Wall Fall Art Show Hello, Yellow! is now on display. Check out the fantastic artworks produced by OLLI members. Thank you to Sandy Roback and her crew for their work producing a marvelous showing!

Don’t miss the Crabtree Photography Fall Display! Congratulations to the OLLI Members selected to show their art photography pieces.
OLLI will celebrate Peace this term with events inspired by the United Nations International Day of Peace. Sign up in the office for Furman Professor Akan Malici’s talk on Paths to Peace, Tues, Oct. 1 @ 3:15 in HC110. Rick McDaniel’s Native American Flutes will open Dr. Malici’s talk. The Peace Wall on the bulletin board will be a revolving source of inspiration and information inner peace and bringing peace into the world. You are invited to submit your poems, photos and art work to fill the Peace Wall to overflowing with OLLI PEACE!
Mexican Train SIG: Join in this fun dominoes-based game! The object of the game is for a player to play all the dominoes from their hand onto one or more chains or “trains,” emanating from a central hub or “station.”This new SIG will meet this Fall term in the Manly Lobby on Tuesdays from 10-12 p.m.
The Meditation SIG will be meeting in HC003 for the Fall term on Wednesdays, beginning September 11, 10:15-10:35. The format is silent guided meditation usually from meditation websites. Participants are encouraged to share such meditations. Please email Liz Kelley or (410) 905-6505 with any questions.

The Knitted Knocker SIG meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month beginning Sept. 10, 1:30-3 p.m., HC003. Knitted Knockers are soft, lightweight breast prosthetics provided free to women who have had mastectomies for pre-reconstruction or as a more comfortable alternative to silicone prosthetics. We support four breast health clinics in the Upstate, so we’re always looking for more knitters and crocheters. We meet once a month to knit together and chat, but most of the knitting is done at home or wherever you happen to be. You may join us or just get more information; stop by or email Cathy Sanchez or Sally Bornmueller.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?
OLLI members can enjoy the Furman Dining Hall for just $6 with your OLLI nametag. This discount is available Mon-Fri (you’ll pay full price on weekends). Please note that there are no University classes scheduled from 12:20- 1:30 p.m. on Mon, Wed, or Fri, therefore lines are long. You may still visit during these times, but may be beneficial if you can adjust your schedule to dine.

Support Lady Paladins Soccer as they face off against Oregon on Sept 8 at 5 p.m. in Stone Stadium!

Furman Department of Music will host the Dave Pietro Quintet Fri, Sept. 13, 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall.

The Furman Psychology Department is looking for volunteers to participate in our newest study. They are seeking adults’ opinions about interpersonal interactions through an online survey. Participants can complete the survey in about 30 minutes from home. Email Monika S if you are interested.

Furman University Associate Professor of Art Michael Brodeur’s “The Veneer of the Familiar,” display of artworks will be shown through Thurs., Sept. 26, in Thompson Gallery, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Mon.-Fri. Free!

Under the direction of Professors Jay Bocook, Director of Athletic Bands, and Sue Samuels, Director of Bands, the Band Extravaganza on September 20, 8:00 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium offers a preview of the band’s 2019 field show as well as crowd favorites. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students at the door.

The Greenville Navy League will host a dinner program on Thursday, Sept 12 at the Poinsett Club in Greenville featuring speaker LCDR Bob Overturf, USN (ret.). LCDR Overtuf was an officer aboard the US Navy guided missile destroyer USS Cole in 2000, when it was attacked by al-Qaeda in the Yemen port of Aden and nearly sunk. Furman University will host the 10th Annual Indie Craft Parade, a curated makers’ market that brings together some of the South’s best handmade talent on Sept 13, 6-9 p.m. at Timmons Arena. VISIT ONLINE for info!

The Carolina Music Museum will present the exhibit Trumpets, Weird and Wonderful – Utley Brass Collection beginning on Fri, Sept 13. Tickets are $6. Visit the CMM website for information HERE!

Snippet from Sally… My name is Sally Bornmueller and I’m thrilled to be serving as President of the OLLI Council this year. I’d like to add my heart-felt welcome to our 225+ new members this fall.
