OLLI NOTES              June 16, 2017

 

Summer hours: The OLLI office will be open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. during the summer.

Don’t toss your OLLI nametag!  If you have a nametag, please save it for next year.  We are happy to make new nametags in case of loss or damage, but it saves the office lots of time and OLLI lots of money if you use yours year after year.  Thank you!

**If you need to cancel your participation in a Friday Bonus Event, remember that you have to do so by the Monday prior.  Otherwise, there is a $25 cancelation fee.

 

We’ve been presented with an idea for a course on “Big Food,” which will look at how big farms and big companies provide much of our nation’s food supply.  If you are interested in helping teach this course in winter 2018, please contact Nancy Kennedy at nancy.kennedy2767@furman.edu or 864-294-2979.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

 

Get ready for the eclipse!  On August 21, 2017, Greenville will be “within totality” (we will see the total eclipse).  Furman is planning a big event, and there will be something special just for OLLI members.  Stay tuned for more information in early August.

 

Save the date!  This year’s Straight Talk summer lecture series, presented by OLLI and the Riley Institute at Furman, will take place Thursday evenings (6:30-8:30 p.m.), August 24, 31, and September 7.  This year’s title is Media and Politics in a Post-Truth Era.  We will be learning about fake news:  where it comes from, why we believe it, how to guard against it, and what is being done to slow its spread.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

 

Help a Furman student! The Social Cognition and Aging Lab at Furman University is seeking participants for two different studies. Participation in either study involves completing an online survey about interpersonal interaction and aging. One survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, the other takes approximately one hour. You will be compensated for your time. The only requirement is that you are 65 years of age or older. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, email psychologyresearch@furman.edu. Sessions will also be conducted in the Herring Center Computer Lab (HC104) at the following times:  Tuesday, June 27, 3 p.m.; Wednesday, June 28, 12:30 & 3 p.m.; and Thursday, June 29, 9 & 11:30 a.m.  No need to RSVP.

 

Bridges to a Brighter Future, a program for high school students whose potential outdistances their circumstances, will hold their Career Expo on June 20, 7-9 p.m., on Furman’s campus.  Organizers are looking for volunteers willing to talk to students about their own careers.  If you are interested in participating, please sign up on this Google Doc.  For more information, contact Dean Bailey, Bridges Assistant Director.

 

Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series, a Greenville tradition since 1968, runs Thursday evenings through August 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s amphitheater. On June 22, enjoy Rhapsody in Blue with piano soloist and Furman professor Derek Parsons, along with the Lakeside Concert Band. Learn more about the Summer Concert Series here.

Learn more about Greenville’s bus system and associated challenges by taking a ride on a Greenlink bus!  The Piedmont Health Foundation needs your help as they work to increase awareness about Greenlink.  This two-hour event will take place on Wednesday, June 28.  You’ll meet at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Augusta Road at 8:50 a.m., take a bus downtown, participate in a focus group (refreshments provided!), and then take the bus back to the church, arriving by 10:40 a.m.  They are particularly interested in people who have never ridden the bus before.  Interested?  Contact Sean Rusnak, a Furman senior working with the Piedmont Health Foundation, to sign up.  Free!

 

Chautauqua History Alive presents Walter Cronkite, Abe Lincoln, Maya Angelou, Cesar Chavez & Rachel Carson | June 16-25. Listen in as Abe Lincoln redefines democracy. Rise up and sing with Maya Angelou. Protest and march with Cesar Chavez. Step inside Silent Spring, with Rachel Carson. And “You Are There” with Walter Cronkite. Greenville Health System invites you to a Men’s Health Roundtable Discussion on Tuesday, June 20 at Noon at Caine Halter YMCA. Join Allison Tucker, PA, of GHS Regional Urology for an informal discussion of men’s health issues, including BPH, sexual dysfunction and recommended screenings. Lunch will be provided.
