Parking stickers will be available at your first class and should be displayed in the lower right hand corner of your back windshield. Please wear your nametag, and let us know if you need a new one, and please check the Lost and Found when you come to class–we have quite a collection of items.

Hop on the bus for BTE1113 SC Technology & Aviation Center on Friday, Sept. 16, at 9:15 a.m. Don’t miss this chance to visit the Donaldson Air Base and learn more about Project Green – a join economic development initiative between CU-ICAR and SC TAC to create a national center for clean transportation and advanced vehicle communications. Then enjoy a bus tour of the entire site! Event fee $15.

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community present a variety of interesting topics.  Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110.  Bring your lunch and enjoy! September 13, Greenville’s Amazing Abundance of Live Theater with Paul Hyde, Greenville News and Jason Johnson, Warehouse Theatre.

 

Celebrate a new school year with Breakfast in the Furman Dining Hall!  Join OLLI friends Wednesday,
Sept. 28, 8-10 a.m.
  Cost is just $5 for all-you-can-eat with your OLLI nametag.  Choices include made-to-order omelets, fruit, breads, eggs, bacon, coffee, juice, and much more.  Fix your plate and enjoy your meal in the Faculty Dining Room, reserved that morning just for us.  Thanks to Linda and Tom Nowlin for hosting!

 

Join OLLI friends, wear PURPLE and cheer on the Furman Volleyball Team!  Furman vs. Western Carolina on Friday, September 30 at 7 p.m. at Alley Gymnasium.  Discounted tickets are available for just $3 in the OLLI office.  Before the game, bring your OLLI nametag and we will have dinner at the Dining Hall.  Meet at 5:30 p.m. and join other OLLI members for a meal before the game. The team is off to a great start; let’s help them continue that success!

Join other OLLI members who are interested in travel to discuss, share experiences and get answers and ideas in a casual social setting.  The Travel SIG is meeting at 4:30 pm on Fri., Sept 16 at the Clubhouse of The Ravines at Camellia, 101 Top Hat Circle, which is about a mile down Duncan Chapel Road from the Herring Center. Bring your adult beverage if you wish.  Also for those of you who traveled over the summer, you might bring some photos to share on a thumb drive that we could display on the television.

 

All levels of Spanish skill are welcome to join the Spanish Conversation SIG.  The group meets at 10:45 on Thursdays in downstairs conference room (HC003) to practice conversing.  In order to keep the conversation flowing, members are encouraged to bring news to share with the group such as details of a class they are taking, a picture about which they would like to expound, or a current topic in the news they would like to discuss.  Contact Merikay Pirrone at merikay58@gmail.com (note new e-mail address) with questions.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

Furman’s Department of Music will host a concert featuring Decoda, the Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, Thursday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m., Daniel Recital Hall. The concert is presented by the Furman University Partners in the Arts initiative funded generously by the Duke Endowment. Free and open to the public!

 

Support our student worker, Laken Weaver as she performs in the Furman University Pauper Player’s production of Seussical: The Musical on Sept. 22 @ 6:30pm, Sept. 23 @ 6:30pm, and Sept. 24 @ 2pm and 6:30pm in McAlister Auditorium. Ticket information will be coming soon!

 

The Riley Institute at Furman presents “Trump, Hillary, and the Constitution” on Constitution Day 2016, Sept. 22, 4-5p.m. in the Watkins Room of the Trone Student Center (above the bookstore).  Free.

 

Furman University Theatre Season Ticket Discount for OLLI members – The Furman Theatre is very generous in offering OLLI members the opportunity to purchase a season pass at the student rate of $28 (all 4 productions) and the faculty/staff rate of $12 for individual productions. What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

Mill Town Players presents “Always… Patsy Cline.”  The musical play runs Sept. 9–Oct. 10 and is filled with down home country humor, true emotion, and Cline’s fabulous hit songs. Centre Stage presents Is He Dead?, a comedy by Mark Twain, Sept. 8-24.  Tickets are $15-$35 at the box office or on the website.  If you are looking for something a bit more serious, check out Centre Stage’s presentation of The Volunteer, Sept. 13- 21.  Tickets for this show are $10-$15 and can be purchased here.

 

OLLI members are invited to join the Thunderbird Square Dance Club of Greenville for an Intro to Square Dance! See what square dancing is all about on Mon., Sept. 12 or Sept. 19, 7 p.m. at Landmark Hall. (156 Landmark Drive, Taylors).  No dancing experience needed and admission is free.  Call 244-3960 with questions. As the old saying goes… “Square Dancing is friendship set to music.”

 

The Greenville Chorale, conducted by Dr. Bingham Vick, Jr., announces the 2016-17 season.  The Chorale begins with “Jewish Musical Moments” celebrating the work of two great composers Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service) by Ernest Bloch and Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein.  The Chorale will ring in the holiday season with 10thAnniversary of Christmas with the Chorale, featuring season favorites along with the always-popular sing-along.  The Chorale is honored to have the support of Sarah and Gordon Herring with the Winter Concert performed by the Herring Chamber Ensemble featuring “The World Beloved – A Bluegrass Mass” by Carol Barnett.  The Chorale will end the season with “A Slice of American Pie.”  This will be a program of pure Americana, including new settings of traditional folk tunes by Dan Forrest; songs from the old Southern tradition; and an enjoyable walk through the “Great American Song Book.” Enjoy a discount of 10% off Season Tickets in September. The Piedmont Woodcarvers present their annual show Sept. 17-18 at the Senior Center 301 West Curtis St Simpsonville. The theme this year is “Christmas.” What a great way to see many hand carved Christmas items, from our own OLLI carvers as well as other local and regional carvers. The hours are 12-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.  Admission is $2.
