The OLLI Office will be closed Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day holiday.  We hope you enjoy the last weekend of summer.  Our regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30 and the telephone number is 864.294.2998.

 

Join us for Back to OLLI on Thursday, Sept. 8, 3-4:30 in Manly Lobby at the Herring Center.  New member Orientation begins at 2:30 p.m.   You may purchase lanyards and OLLI mugs, pick up your name tag (if you don’t have one already) and parking sticker, meet and reunite with your OLLI friends, and enjoy refreshments. Also, make sure you check out the OLLI Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room and meet Furman’s new Provost, Dr. George Shields.  Don’t miss the fun!

 

Fall Registration continues! Please refer to your confirmation e-mail and note the “class status” for the courses for which you registered (registered, registered not paid, waitlist). If you have questions regarding your confirmation, we invite you to call the OLLI office at 294-2998.

 

**All OLLI members will receive parking passes at Back to OLLI or your first class along with nametags for new members.  There is no need to make a special trip to the office for your nametag or parking sticker.  Returning OLLI members, please use the nametag you already have.**

There is room for you in the following Bonus Events!

Hop on the bus for the SC Technology & Aviation Center bonus event scheduled for Fri., Sept. 16, at 9:15 a.m. Don’t miss this chance to visit the Donaldson Air Base and learn more about Project Green – a join economic development initiative between CU-ICAR and SC TAC to create a national center for clean transportation and advanced vehicle communications. You will then have a bus tour of the entire site! Event fee is $15. Call or stop by OLLI Office to sign up by Wednesday, Sept. 7!

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Attention OLLI members! Please consider becoming a class liaison. No experience is required and it’s a wonderful way to assist our wonderful instructors and get to know other OLLI members. A training session will be offered on Sept. 8, 1:30 p.m., HC111.  Please contact Pam Roberson to let her know that you are willing.

 

The Current Events, Curriculum Subcommittee, the group that brought you The American Political ProcessChina-2016– and 2015—World in Crisis? is looking for two new members. Consider joining Viktor Hanuska, Tim Henry, Pat Hicks, and Dan Kappel and have some fun.  They do!  Please see Heidi Wright if you would like to additional information and at the same time support your OLLI at Furman Program.

 

The Classic Car SIG will have an open meeting for anyone interested and existing members in HC105 from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.  Come and share car stories of your summer and expectations for the coming year.

 

Join other OLLI members who are interested in travel to discuss, share experiences and get answers and ideas in a casual social setting.  The Travel SIG is meeting at 4:30 pm on Fri., Sept 16 at the Clubhouse of The Ravines at Camellia, 101 Top Hat Circle, which is about a mile down Duncan Chapel Road from the Herring Center. Bring your adult beverage if you wish.  Also for those of you who traveled over the summer, you might bring some photos to share on a thumb drive that we could display on the television.

 

The Swamp Rabbit Knitters have a new time!  All OLLI knitters are invited to join members of this SIG on Thursday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. in front of the fireplace before and during the Fall term.  Bring any handwork or project you like.  Questions? Contact Gail Kirby.

 

The Bowling SIG will once again be rolling their bowling balls in the OLLI Fall Bowling League at AMF Star Lanes (740 Pleasantburg Dr.). The league will begin Monday, Sept. 12 and run 10 weeks. Practice starts at 12:45 p.m. and matches begin at 1 p.m. with the first week serving as an organizational meeting. Cost is $10 and bowlers of all levels are welcome! You may sign up as an individual or as a team of three. Contact Mike Halloran with questions or to sign up.

 

The OLLI @ Furman Fall term Baiden Wall Exhibit will be September 12 – October 28, 2016. The exhibit will feature works from those who participated in the following Painting and Drawing classes; Acrylic Painting, Basic Watercolor, Zentangle, Chinese Painting, Pen & Ink, Portraits in Watercolor, Watercolor in Motion, and Commercial Oil Portraits. OLLI members and instructors may submit one or two works. All artwork must be framed and ready to hang with wire attached. NO saw tooth hangers please. Submission dates are August 22 to September 7. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

The Furman University Department of Music presents acclaimed organist Nathan Laube on Tues., Sept. 6, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Memorial Chapel.  The recital is open to the public and is presented by the Furman Hartness Organ Series and the 2016-2017 Sound Quality Concert Series. Tickets, available in advance or at the door, are $10 for seniors and can be purchased on the website or by calling the Department of Music at (864) 294-2086.

 

Furman’s Department of Music will host a concert featuring Decoda, the Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, Thursday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m., Daniel Recital Hall. The concert is presented by the Furman University Partners in the Arts initiative funded generously by the Duke Endowment. Free and open to the public!

 

Furman University Theatre Season Ticket Discount for OLLI members – The Furman Theatre is very generous in offering OLLI members the opportunity to purchase a season pass at the student rate of $28 (all 4 productions) and the faculty/staff rate of $12 for individual productions. New this year, Season Ticket Holders will receive their own Season Code that will allow online seat selection any time of the year.  Visit the Furman Theatre website to purchase your season pass or individual tickets.  Call 294-2125 with questions.

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

Mill Town Players presents “Always… Patsy Cline.”  The musical play runs Sept. 9 – Oct. 10 and is filled with down home country humor, true emotion, and Cline’s fabulous hit songs. Centre Stage presents Is He Dead?, a comedy by Mark Twain, Sept. 8-24.  Tickets are $15-$35 at the box office or on the website.  If you are looking for something a bit more serious, check out Centre Stage’s presentation of The Volunteer, Sept. 13- 21.  Tickets for this show are $10-$15 and can be purchased here.

 

All OLLI members are invited to join the Thunderbird Square Dance Club of Greenville for an Intro to Square Dance! See what square dancing is all about on Mon., Sept. 12 or Sept. 19, 7 p.m. at Landmark Hall. (156 Landmark Drive, Taylors).  No dancing experience needed and admission is free.  Call 244-3960 with questions. As the old saying goes… “Square Dancing is friendship set to music.”
