Children’s Authors & Illustrators Week, Part II

And now a word from our children’s literature expert, Dr. Renita Schmidt, Education Department:

My favorite place at the Duke Library is the juvenile and curriculum section in the basement area near the computer center. When you enter the juvenile section, the lights may be off…but don’t worry, a motion sensor typically turns the lights on as you enter! Very cool! If you want to browse the latest and greatest in children’s literature you’ll find a new books shelf on the right side of the area where you enter too. You won’t want to forget about looking for your old favorites from childhood either because they are very likely in the collection.

I’m often asked for my top ten favorite books or authors list. I can’t do it because every time I write it…I see the titles and authors that I forgot. For today though, at this moment in time, my top ten favorites are
1. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznik
2. Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale by Mo Willems
3. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Millems
4. Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool (2011 Newbery Medal Winner)
5. The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron (Lucky Breaks is the sequel)
6. The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney
7. Holes by Louis Sachar
8. Al Capone Does My Shirts by Genifer Choldenko (Al Cappone Shines My Shoes is the sequel!)
9. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
10. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
