How to Have a Successful First Day at an Internship

New experiences can be scary… you never know what to expect, and the fear of failure can be overwhelming to say the least. That said, in light of the beginning of my internship at the hospital on Monday, I have decided to make a short list of ways to have a fantastic first day.

1. Be on time! If necessary, be early! Punctuality should be of the highest priority on the first day, and your alarm clock should be placed as far away from your bed as possible so that you are forced to get up (this really does work).
2. Dress professionally. Drop the usual college wardrobe of t-shirts and sweats in exchange for slacks, oxfords, and blazers. Dress for success!
3. Eat a nutritional breakfast. This big day requires fuel from the start. Otherwise, your energy will be lacking and your enthusiasm will plummet.
4. Make sure that you know your schedule and where you are supposed to go by heart… It might be helpful to scout out your destinations the day before to eliminate your chances of becoming lost and flustered.
5. Show up with a smile on your face. Friendliness and positivity is key in making good first impressions… and good friends! Be nice to your colleagues and they will be nice back.
