Opportunities

I am a communications major, so I am permanently linked to all emails sent within my department. Anything interesting and comm related comes my way. I hear about CLPs (Cultural Life Program). I hear about internship opportunities from Furman alumni. I hear about classes being offered. I hear about how to best get into specific classes. I also don’t always read each of the emails thoroughly, so there could very possibly be other things not directly related to communications.

Sometimes, I even get emails directed to the entire student body. See example below. blogpicYes, one more thing to encourage me to think about the future. This email though, as well as all of the emails pushing opportunities and experiences, have been huge as a resource to me over these past few years at Furman.

I have never before considered Grad School. And now, I have. I read this email because of my slight interest in Management, and I signed myself up for a dinner meeting in the Paddock and then scurried on over to this meeting. I knew absolutely nothing about the program, but I was informed that Furman has an affiliate program with Wake Forest in Business Management. It looks pretty exciting. I have always been confident in my decision to declare myself a communication studies major, but I have been less than confident in what I want to do with the major after college. I have dabbled in the creative arts and the journalism, but I am still unsure.

I will be interning in Greenville at Smoak Public Relations this summer and am excited for the opportunity to test out this field and figure out my specific interests. But, I like to think that if I do not end up being a Public Relations fanatic and success, I still have the opportunity to use my liberal arts degree more specifically in Grad School without feeling as if I have simply dabbled in college.

The opportunities and resources in Career Services, the Internship Offices, and the Communications Office have been helpful in steering me towards interests and providing me with options. Who knows if I will end up in a Business Grad School or not, but it is comforting knowing that someone else is pushing possibilities by me, so I don’t miss out on things I may never have considered.

And here is a completely irrelevant picture of my favorite (or most bizarre) museum I visited on my Study Abroad trip. If you’re ever in Amsterdam, visit the Cheese Museum.
