OLLI NOTES February 1 , 2019

The Spring Brochure 2019 is now available on our website HERE. Copies will be mailed on Fri, Feb 8. Registration will begin on Tues. Feb 26 for course package holders and Thurs. Feb 28 for single course purchasers. The Spring 2019 Registration form can be found HERE.

Get ready to hit the links! It is time to sign up for the 2nd Annual OLLI Golf Scramble on Monday, March 4 at the Furman Golf Course. Cost will be $75. This includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, lunch and prizes. Last year we had 48 players. Let’s shoot for 72 players this year. George Hammond will be coordinating this event and you may email with questions. Deadline for signing up in the OLLI office is Fri, Feb. 22.

Wintertime is the perfect time to curl up with a good book! Checkout the new titles in the Marvin Book Nook.

OLLI SPECIALITY TRIP TO THE BILTMORE HOUSE: Tuesday, March 12. Depart Furman at 9:30 a.m. and return @ 6 p.m. Cost is $150, ($110 for Biltmore season pass holders), which includes transportation, bus driver tip, lunch at the Stable Café, admission to Biltmore House and Grounds, and a choice of ONE of two Behind the Scenes Curatorial Tours: Architecture/Engineering/Construction OR Art Treasures of the Biltmore House. Join in our Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, where community speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and enjoy! On Feb. 5, David Hall of the Greenville Health System will present Non-Addictive Treatment of Acute and Chronic Pain.

Join the Paris Life class for a special Documentary film event which will highlight the history of the American Hospital in Paris which played an important role in Paris and France during WWI, and many Americans – doctors, nurses, and philanthropists, volunteered to provide the medical and support services well before America officially entered the war. Members of the Vanderbilt family (think Asheville’s Biltmore House) were directly involved with the war effort at the hospital. Feb. 14 at 3:15 p.m., HC110. More info Here.

Looking to “give back” with a flexible volunteer opportunity that utilizes your skills and interests? Your OLLI peers can help! Visit the Community Volunteer SIG on Wed., Feb. 13th from 12:20 – 1:20 p.m. in HC004 to receive information about opportunities with 24 organizations. We will be featuring Slater Marietta’s Foothills Family Services (adult mentoring, food delivery, Strawberry Festival) and Friends of the Greenville County Library (sort, gift shop events). The Furman Faculty Chamber Music Series will present a concert Fri, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall on campus. Following the recital in the DuPre Rhame Foyer, guests will have an opportunity to meet the performers at a reception hosted by the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota. Find more information HERE.

Furman Music presents the duo runedako performance by husband and wife team of Furman University music professors Ruth Neville and Daniel Koppelman. Herring Chamber Ensemble Winter Concert – Sun, Feb 17, 3 p.m. Daniel Chapel, Furman University. Open seating, doors open at 2:30 p.m. Conducted by Bing Vick, the HCE celebrates 22 years of beautiful choral chamber music. Discounted tickets $24 in the OLLI office.

The Riley Institute presents The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row with Anthony Ray Hinton on February 27, 7 p.m. McAlister Auditorium. A book signing by Mr. Hinton will follow. Free, but reservations are encouraged. Learn more and reserve your seat here.

The Peace Center is offering FREE tickets for our senior partners, for a performance coming up this Monday, February 4 at 11:45 AM as part of our Peace Passport series. The performance is Celebrating Black History Month and is a unique performance of storytelling, poetry and dance that is sure not to be missed. If you are interested in securing tickets for this free performance, please EMAIL and let them know how many you’d like to reserve. Upper South Carolina Council of the Navy League is pleased to announce that Michael Leinbach and Jonathon Ward, co-authors of the book Bringing Columbia Home, will be guest speakers at its Feb 20, 2019, 6:00 p.m. dinner program at the Poinsett Club in Greenville. The authors will present the story of the tragic loss and subsequent recovery efforts for the space shuttle Columbia and the inspiring message it ultimately holds. 1st Annual Greenville Jewish Film Festival Featuring 3 days of films and special events will be held Thurs, Feb 28 – Sun Mar 3. Visit the website for information on the featured films and to purchase tickets.

Upcoming exhibits at the Southeast Center for Photography (116 E. Broad St., Greenville) will feature works by OLLI Members. The center’s “Members” show runs through Feb. 9 and includes pieces by Bruce Schlein, Linda Hosek, Nadia Land Greene, Robert Greene. The center’s “Black, White & Monochrome” show opens 6-8 p.m. Fri, Feb 1 runs through Feb 28. and includes pieces by Linda Hosek. The center is an exhibition and education venue promoting the art and enjoyment of fine photography. It offers monthly juried exhibitions, workshops and informal monthly meetings for photographers. Book Drive Call for Furman Literacy Corner which serves students age 6-14 to develop their reading, writing, and overall communication skills. The program is in need of age group appropriate new or used book donations or donations of Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift cards. Help a child to become today a reader, tomorrow a leader!
