OLLI NOTES February 8, 2019

Get ready to hit the links! It’s time to sign up for the 2nd Annual OLLI Golf Scramble Mon., March 4 at the Furman Golf Course. Cost is $75, which includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, lunch and prizes. George Hammond is coordinating this event, email with questions. Sign up in the OLLI office by Fri, Feb. 22.

Handicap Parking at Herring Center We ask all members to keep in mind that there are a limited number of designated handicap spots at our building. Please only park in the handicap parking area if you have a permit to do so, as we have a number of members who require these parking spots. Thank you for your help!

Montgomery Civil Rights Trip March 17-18 has openings available. This compelling, historical trip will include visits to the Legacy Museum, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the Freedom Ride Museum, and Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, allowing participants to gain a greater understanding of this pivotal time in our nation’s history. • Alan Toney presents Whatever Happened to Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt? Tues, Feb. 26, 3:15p.m., HC110. Cornelia, the only child of Biltmore’s George and Edith Vanderbilt, was raised in luxury. Inspired by her parents’ concern for the wider world, she left her marriage to a British aristocrat for a surprisingly varied and eccentric life of travel, love and the arts. After retiring, Alan Toney motorbiked across six continents, tracking Cornelia’s life to an unmarked grave on a remote island off the coast of Scotland.

OLLI HAPPENINGS
Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, where community speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and enjoy! Feb. 12, Brandon Inabinet and John Paul Sleiman present Furman University Student Debate Society in Action.

Join the Paris Life class for a documentary film highlighting the history of the American Hospital in Paris, which played an important role in France during WWI. Many Americans (doctors, nurses, and philanthropists) volunteered to provide medical and support services well before the US entered the war. Members of the Vanderbilt family were involved as well. Want to give back with a flexible volunteer opportunity utilizing your skills and interests? Visit Community Volunteer SIG Wed. Feb. 13, 12:20-1:20 p.m., HC004 to learn about opportunities with 24 organizations. We will feature Slater Marietta’s Foothills Family Services (adult mentoring, food delivery, Strawberry Festival) and Friends of the Greenville County Library (sort, gift shop events). Let’s play Bocce! The OLLI Bocce SIG will meet on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. during the winter term, weather cooperative. Meet in the lobby or in the field across the drive where the Furman band practices. The Movie SIG will meet Feb 25 at 3:15 in HC103. Space limited, contact Debbie Ahlers to confirm and for info. The selected movie is Doubt (2008) with Philip Seymour Hoffman & Meryl Streep. Watch on your own before the meeting. Discussion will include interesting facts and reactions to the movie.

What’s Going on at Furman?
Furman University Lyric Theatre, directed by Furman’s Grant Knox will present the musical “She Loves Me” on Thurs, Feb. 14, and Sat, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, “She Loves Me” is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. Tickets, $10 for seniors. Furman University Theatre directed by Furman Professor Rhett Bryson will present “The Diviners” by Jim Leonard, Jr. on Wed, Feb. 13 – Sat, Feb.16, and Thurs, Feb. 21, – Sat, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees Feb. 17 and Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. Furman Playhouse. Tickets, $15. Visit Furman Theater.

Interested in hearing amazing talks on a wide array of different topics? TEDxFurmanU 2019 is hosted by the organization that hosts Innovation Hour and it will be held Sat, Feb. 16 from 1-4PM in Younts Conference Center. Herring Chamber Ensemble Winter Concert – Sun, Feb 17, 3 p.m. in Daniel Chapel. Conducted by Bing Vick, the HCE celebrates 22 years of beautiful choral chamber music. Discounted tickets $24 in the office.

Furman Music presents the duo runedako performance by husband/wife team of Furman music professors Ruth Neville and Daniel Koppelman. They will perform pieces for duo piano Mon, Feb. 18, 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. Free. Follow the link for more information.

The Riley Institute presents The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row with Anthony Ray Hinton on February 27, 7 p.m. McAlister Auditorium. A book signing by Mr. Hinton will follow. Free, but reservations are encouraged. Learn more and reserve your seat here.

What’s Going on Around Greenville?
Upper South Carolina Council of the Navy League welcomes Michael Leinbach and Jonathon Ward, co-authors of Bringing Columbia Home, to its Feb 20, 6 p.m. dinner program at the Poinsett Club. They will present the story of the tragic loss and subsequent recovery efforts for the space shuttle Columbia and the inspiring message it holds. Book Drive Call for Furman Literacy Corner which serves students age 6-14 to develop their reading, writing, and overall communication skills.
