OLLI NOTES              

Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement

 

The OLLI Office is open 8:30-5 Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays.  Our number is 864-294-2998.

 

Summer registration continues!  Register online or in the OLLI office. The brochure is on the website and in the office. Pick up one for yourself and a few more to share with friends and neighbors.  Summer is a great time to try OLLI for the first time.  Classes are just $35 and there is no membership requirement. It is a great time to encourage a friend to try OLLI!

Celebrate another great year at OLLI at our annual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 22 at the Younts Center. We will celebrate with emcee Sarah Fletcher, a bit of trivia fun, recognize incoming and outgoing Council members and of course, enjoy time with OLLI members before the summer is upon us. Doors open at 11:30 for fellowship (cash bar available).  Enjoy a buffet lunch at noon including baby greens with seasonal fruit salad, herb marinated chicken, roasted shrimp with peppers, roasted fingerling potatoes, balsamic glazed Brussels sprouts and cupcakes for dessert!  Dress is casual.  Sign up in the OLLI office for just $20 by Wednesday, May 16.  Please see Heidi Wright with dietary restrictions.

 

The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the following slate for Council openings to be voted on at the Spring Luncheon on May 22:  President-Elect/VP Membership: Sally Bornmueller; VP Finance and Administration: Ron Eldridge; Members at Large: Mary Kay Kantz and David Johnson and filling an unexpired two-year term as Member at Large: Tom Nowlin. Thank you to May Welborn, VP/President Elect/Nominating Committee Chair and her committee for their work, and thank you to the nominees who said “yes” when asked!

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

PAH818 Casseroles will not meet on Monday, May 14.

HIS671 Beyond the Titanic will not meet on Monday, May 14

HFE574 Hearing Loss & Aging will not meet Wednesday, May 16 (last class was May 9)

 

If you will be at the Herring Center on Thursday, May 17, please note that afternoon traffic may be heavy due to a ceremony at Timmons at 2 p.m.  Members with 1:30 p.m. classes should allow a little more time to arrive.

 

There is room for YOU in the Behind the Scenes at OLLI Bonus Event on May 18 at 1 p.m., HC110.

Bob Dylan Part II – Dylan and Friends will conclude with a Birthday Bash for Bob on Thursday, May 24, 1:30–3 p.m. in HC110, featuring musical artist Richard Bryant from New York City. Richard has interpreted Dylan for NY audiences for many years and will perform a selection of Dylan tunes from the sixties to the present. All are welcome!

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Unique Opportunity for OLLI Members! Make plans to attend a special seminar, AYURVEDA: India’s Holistic and Preventative Approach to Health, conducted by Dr. Kanhirala Jouhar, the Chief Physician at the Kalari Kovilakom Ayurveda Hospital, in Kerala, India. Ayurveda emphasizes practices of detoxification and rejuvenation and is an ancient approach to well-being and understanding of your unique body. Dr. Savita Nair (Furman University, Associate Professor of History and Asian Studies) will introduce the presentation, which will take place Monday, May 14, HC110 in two parts. Part I – The Basics – 3:15-4:45; Part II – The Next Level – 4:45-5:45. All are welcome to join us for one or both of the sessions.

 

Lunch and Learn, Tuesdays, HC110, 12:30-1:15 p.m. May 15, Organic and Sustainability Farming Techniques for Furman’s Garden and Your Garden with Bruce Adams, farm manager and the Furman Farm, organic & compost manager for the Furman campus.

 

Bring your questions, findings, etc. to the newly formed Space Exploration SIG today Friday, May 11, 1 – 3 p.m., HC004. The Space Exploration SIG is a collaborative effort to stay informed about and discuss space exploration. Each meeting will include discussion of the technology and findings of present and future human and robotic missions. Contact Bill Bradshaw for more information.

 

Furman’s football season opens this year at Clemson’s Death Valley on Sat., September 1.  There may be an opportunity to attend this game with transportation from OLLI for approximately 24 OLLI members. The cost will be around $100 per person, which includes transportation, game ticket and some refreshments. It is important to note this will be an afternoon game, which means it will be hot, (most likely very hot), and you must be able to walk from the parking lot (maybe as far as 1 mile each way). What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Daniel Dining Hall summer hours are 7:30 – 9 a.m., 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 5 – 6:30 p.m. The Paladen and Library Cafe are open for the summer and the Paddock will be closed. To see summer hours and daily menus, click here. Remember that your membership allows you to eat in the Dining Hall for only $6 with your OLLI name badge, which will continue through June and begin again in September.  There is no OLLI discount in the Dining Hall on weekends, or in July, August, or December.

 

Join M. Judson Booksellers for a Sunday Sit-Down Supper on May 20! Four courses, fine china, and a good book make for a event like no other. We’ll be hosting Asheville author Denise Kiernan and her history of the Biltmore Estate, The Last Castle. Heidi and Joe Trull of Grits & Groceries will be joining us in the kitchen, crafting a menu that reflects the time and place of the book. Tickets and more information available at the link below, or call the store at 864-603-2412.
