OLLI NOTES              

Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement

 

The OLLI Office is open 8:30-5 Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays.  Our number is 864-294-2998.

 

Summer registration begins Tuesday, May 8 at 8 a.m. for everyone. The summer flyer is available on the website. Papers copies will not be mailed, but will be available in the office next week. Pick one up, and a few more to share with friends and neighbors. Summer is a great time for people to try OLLI for the first time. Classes are just $35 (unless noted) and there is no membership requirement. A great time to encourage a friend to try out OLLI!

 

Save the Date and plan to join OLLI members as we celebrate another wonderful year at our annual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 22 at the Younts Center. Watch for details of how to sign-up next week!

 

A Note on Parking – A gentle reminder to please be aware of handicapped spaces as you park. The area next to those spaces with the diagonal lines are critical for the handicapped space to work so that the passengers can get in and out of the car. Thank you for leaving those open for those that need them!

25 Years of OLLI/FULIR

Join OLLI members for some fun water aerobics and friendly competition at OLLI’s 25 cent Aqua Fitness Event! The event will be held on Friday, May 11 from 9 -11 a.m. at Furman’s PAC Pool. Learn more here  and stop by or call the OLLI office to sign up. Participants and spectators welcome!

 

A little rain couldn’t stop OLLI members from making OLLI Night at the Greenville Drive a HOMERUN for all that attended! Special thanks to the committee for putting together a fun and memorable evening for all!

Lunch and Learn, Tuesdays, HC110, 12:30-1:15 p.m. May 1, What Are the Odds? – You can be amazed and have fun with math with John Harris, Ph.D., Furman math professor.

 

This Gluten-Free SIG is for anyone interested in sharing gluten-free recipes and information on gluten-free products available locally and online, as well as information on local restaurants/businesses that offer gluten-free options. We will meet on the 1st Wednesday of each month, beginning May 2 at 1 p.m, HC003. For additional information, contact Diane Bagwell  at 864-344-1976.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Anne Frank. Ruby Bridges. Ryan White. More than just familiar names, their stories of courage, resilience and endurance embody the message of The Power of Children – Making a Difference, the newest exhibition at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman University, a Smithsonian Affiliate, on display through Wednesday, May 23. What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 28. This is a safe way to discard of old medications that might be taking up space in your medicine cabinet. Visit the DEA website to find a collection site near you!

Greenville Chorale’s “Boots & Barbecue” will be held April 27, 6-10 p.m., Downtown Airport Hanger. OLLI members are invited to join the party to celebrate the Greenville Chorale. Great food-wine-beer, dancing to live band, silent auction, and live auction (care to bid on the opportunity to CONDUCT the Chorale in concert!?). Tickets are $35/person, $60/pair and are available in the OLLI Office.

 

The Friends of the Greenville County Library invite you to their Used Book Sale, April 27-29.  The sale will be held at the Merovan Center Suite E2 (1200 Woodruff Road, across from Kohl’s.) View hours and details on the https://www.greenvillelibrary.org/friends

 

Music on Sunday at the Temple of Israel, April 29, 3 p.m.:  The Poinsett Piano Trio will perform with a complimentary wine and cheese reception to follow. Visit their website for more information.

 

Join Chautauqua Tue., May 1, 7 p.m. to hear amazing stories of Francis Marion (Swamp Fox) who with his ragged band of volunteers just kept fighting until the Revolution was won. Led by Dr. Christine Swager, author of 7 books on the Southern Campaign. She knows where all the bodies are buried. This event is not a costumed performance. Hughes Main Library, downtown Greenville. Were you involved with the United Way during your career and interested in reconnecting? Volunteer with ReUNITED, United Way’s new group for retirees, on Saturday, May 5, Hands on Greenville Day.  We will meet at 8:30 a.m. at A Child’s Haven (helping them sanitize and organize INSIDE) and then join the after Party at Fluor Field at 12 pm. The Navy League invited OLLI members are invited to attend a special dinner program on May 9 at the Poinsett Club. Brigadier General James Walker, USMC (ret), will discuss how the sea services’ focus on mission accomplishment can improve our daily lives. General Walker graduated from Clemson University and the University of South Carolina law school and went on to serve as the Executive Assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the senior uniformed attorney in the Marine Corps. The Guild of the Greenville Symphony will again host Downtown Condo Rondo on Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., during Artisphere. This year’s theme is Urban Lifestyles featuring a variety of city homes throughout the downtown.
