Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement

 

The drop/add period for Winter Term ends today, except for Monday classes.  After today, refunds will no longer be given. Remember there is a $10 fee if you drop without adding another class.

Just a few spots left. Sign up now! Chautauqua History Alive presents a private OLLI performance of George Washington, Courage, on Saturday, February 3 at 4 p.m. at the Herring Center. Ron Carnegie – “the” George Washington at Colonial Williamsburg–performs. You’ll laugh – you’ll be amazed – you’ll have questions. And George Washington will answer them. OLLI Social precedes show. Tickets $5 – available with check or cash in the OLLI office (864.294.2998).

 

Breakfast in the Furman Dining Hall! Join OLLI friends for breakfast, 8-10 a.m. Tuesday, January 30.  Cost is just $6 for all-you-can-eat with your OLLI nametag. Choices include made-to-order omelets, fruit, eggs, eggs, bacon, coffee, juice, and much more. Fix your plate and then enjoy your meal in the Faculty Dining Room, reserved that morning just for OLLI. Parking is available between the intramural fields or at the chapel.

 

OLLI Curriculum Enhancement Grants:  Have you ever wanted to teach at OLLI?  Are you an OLLI member with a lifelong learning passion that you’d like to pursue but the cost puts it out of reach? Instructors, is there something you wish you had, or a workshop you’d like to attend, to make your course even better?  An OLLI Grant can help! Members for at least six terms may apply for grants $200-$2,000. Within 2 years of receiving funds, recipients will share what they learn with the membership with a new course, creation of a new committee, a series of seminars… Applications available on the OLLI bulletin board or the website; deadline is March 1. Read and Explore with OLLI continues! Join us in reading Carry Me Across the Water by Ethan Canin. Free copies are available in the OLLI Office as they are returned.  If you got one, please return it to the office (not the Book Nook) as soon as possible after you have read it so that others can enjoy it too.

 

Dr. Fred Leffert, long-time OLLI instructor with a lifelong interest in Jewish studies, will explore What We Leave Behind:  Jewish Memorial Traditions and Practices on Tue., Jan. 30 at 3:15 p.m. in Room 110.  Free. Sign up now in the OLLI office.

 

Get in the mood for Carry Me Across the Water by screening the 1968 film Hell in the Pacific, starring Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. Join Dr. Jim Leavell, Professor Emeritus of History and Herring Professor Emeritus of Asian Studies, on Friday, February 16 at 1 p.m., HC110, as he guides us through the events of the Battle of Okinawa. Sign up in the OLLI office.

 

TRAVEL WITH OLLI

The Travel Committee has a unique opportunity for OLLI members interested in Exploring the Road Less-Traveled in the North of England . . . by foot, van, (and the five senses).  On August 28, OLLI @ Furman members will embark on this 10 day adventure which will include walks, back roads drives, and special places in Northumberland and the English Lake District featuring Hadrian’s Wall, the Cheviot Hills, the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne, the inspiring landscapes of the English Romantic Movement, and much more. OLLI HAPPENINGS

A very special Lunch and Learn: Tuesday, January 30: Two Views/Administration and Student: What is Unique about the Furman Experience? Connie Carson, Vice President, Furman Student Life and Jess Norum, Furman’s Student Government President will explore this question from two different insights and perspectives.

 

Join the Handchimes SIG! It’s a group effort to produce beautiful music and have fun at the same time. The most important skill is to be diligent and ring at the right time so as not to overpower your neighbor’s note that is being rung at the “actual” right time! Golfers of all levels are invited to take part in the OLLI GOLF SCRAMBLE! The 18-hole scramble is open to all OLLI members and will be held Tuesday, March 13. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Lesléa Newman, writer, poet, advocate and lecturer, will present “He Continues to Make a Difference: The Story of Matthew Shepard,” on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Watkins Room, Trone Student Center. What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

The Herring Chamber Ensemble presents its 21st annual winter concert Sunday, February 18, 3 p.m. at Buncombe Street UMC. “Music to console, to celebrate life and singing, and is just plain fun to sing” features Canadian composer, Eleanor Daley’s Requiem, selections by American composers, and a salute to the Kings Singers, celebrating their 50th anniversary year. OLLI instructor, Bing Vick conducts the Herring Ensemble. Discounted tickets ($30 ticket for $24) are available to OLLI members in the OLLI office.

 

The Tryon Dark Horse Theater Project will present John Lennon, the Mobster, & the Lawyer on Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m.  Due to very limited seating, early reservations are recommended. Learn more here.
