The current OLLI parking sticker is a purple square.  All current members should have one; if you do not, stop by the office to pick one up.  The first parking sticker is free with your membership.  Additional stickers are $1.

 

Make plans to attend this year’s BIG Fall event Cruisin’ with OLLI.  We will revisit old time rock and roll, drive-ins, and hot wheels on Friday, October 28, 2-5 p.m. at the Herring Center. Jump back in time as and share time with other OLLI members rockin’ to the tunes of American Bandstand, check out the wheels of the Classic Car SIG members and enjoy some favorite foods of the times. No cost to attend; reservations are helpful. Purchase a food ticket in the OLLI office for $10 (mini-hamburger or hotdog, fries and your choice of a coke float or root beer float) if you like.

 

Have you been waiting to hear the beautiful piano in the Herring Center Lobby?  Please join us for a dedication of the grand piano graciously given to the Herring Center by Sarah and Gordon Herring on Thursday, October 27, 4 p.m.  Furman students and faculty will provide music and we will enjoy a demonstration of the instrument’s electronic capabilities.  A celebratory reception will follow.  Reservations are helpful as we plan the reception.  Please call or stop by the office to let us know you’ll be there.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community present a variety of interesting topics.  Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110.  Bring your lunch and enjoy! October 18, “Around the World in 80 Slides” with OLLI Members Sally and Pete Potosky.

 

Enjoy productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company captured live in HD from Stratford-upon-Avon.  Hamlet will be presented Wednesday, Oct 19 at 4 p.m. in Burgiss Theatre in the Trone Student Center.  Tickets are available in the OLLI office and at the door and are $16 for OLLI members, $18 for general public.

 

Special Event: A group of OLLI members has developed the Personal & Community Engagement (PCE) Initiative, a personal service initiative to simplify matching older adults with meaningful volunteer positions compatible with your skills and desires. Come meet with your peers to discuss volunteer options with 15 Greenville Agencies. Wed., Oct. 19, 1:30-3:30, HC110. Sign up in the OLLI Office.

Out and About Singles will be attending Miracle on 34th Street at the Greenville Little Theatre on Thursday, December 8 at 8 pm. Tickets are $33. Tickets go fast so we are planning early. If interested, contact Sue Miller.

TRAVEL WITH OLLI
The International Travel Committee is exploring the possibility of offering an OLLI @ Furman trip with a Furman faculty member to visit the Battlefields of Western Europe in mid to late May, 2017.  Interested?  Contact Heidi Wright in the OLLI office to help us gauge participation. A meeting will be held soon with Furman faculty to overview the details of the trip.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

The Sound Quality Concert Series presents the Furman Symphony Orchestra Fri., Oct. 21, 8 p.m. at McAlister Auditorium.  Tickets are $10 for OLLI members. For information, visit the website or call 294.2086.

Conservation Biologist and Furman alum Dr. Thomas Rainwater will speak Thurs., Oct. 20 at 7pm in the Watkins Room, Trone Student Center. His talk, “Reality Bites: Cultural Challenges in Conserving the World’s Endangered Crocodiles and Turtles” is free and open to the public.

Furman University presents “A Conversation with South Carolina Congressional Candidates:  An Experiment in Civility and Substance” on Monday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Watkins Room, Trone Student Center.  The event is free and open to the public but tickets are required.  OLLI members may pick up tickets (limit 2 per person, and you must show your OLLI nametag or Paladin Pass) at Johns Hall 111 beginning on October 19.  You may also pick up tickets beginning October 20 (limit 4 per person) at the Trone Student Center information desk.

 

The Furman Fall Festival of Choral Music will close with a concert on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on the Furman University campus. Combined, the Furman Singers and High School Festival Choir number nearly 140 voices. Performing a mix of traditional sacred anthems, spirituals, and secular settings of significant poetry, the choirs will be accompanied by Furman senior Kevin Edens and Furman Music Professor Dr. Vivian Hamilton.

 

Work by Furman University Department of Art faculty will be on display in Thompson Gallery, Roe Art Building, Oct. 7-Nov. 7. Thompson Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A reception and talk with artists is set for Friday, Nov. 4, 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Gallery.

 

Nick Galasso, Ph.D. who leads Oxfam’s work on economic inequality and governance will be The Riley Institute’s Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow will be speaking on “The Wealth Gap: Why It Matters and How We Can Fix It” in Shaw Hall, Younts Conference Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25.

 

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

The Greenville Chorale and Greenville Symphony Orchestra will present two monumental works by Jewish composers: SACRED SERVICE by Ernest Bloch and CHICHESTER PSALMS by Leonard Bernstein on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. Bing Vick conducts the concert and invites all to experience a wonderful evening of music.   Discounted tickets ($32 for $40 ticket) are available in the OLLI office.

 

The Upstate Women’s Club invites you to the “Peace of Triune” Art Auction, October 20, 7 p.m. at The Upper Room (7 College St., Greenville).  The event will feature artwork produced by members of the Triune community and local area artisans. Learn more and make your reservation here. Free!

 

The Travelers Rest Arts Alliance invites you to Art on the Trail Oct. 21-22 at Trailblazer Park in Travelers Rest.
