Summer registration continues!  Remember to pick up a brochure in the office, and a few more to share with friends and neighbors.  Summer is a great time to try OLLI for the first time.  Classes are just $30 and there is no membership requirement.

Celebrate another great year at OLLI at our annual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 17 at the Younts Center.  Doors open at 11:30 for fellowship at the pavilion next door (cash bar available).   Enjoy a buffet lunch at noon including Grilled Salmon or Almond Crusted Chicken, Watercress Salad, Fresh Fruit, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and your choice of pie or cake for dessert!  Congratulate the new Volunteer of the Year, elect new OLLI Council members, and visit with OLLI friends old and new. Dress is casual.  Sign up in the OLLI office for just $15 by Wednesday, May 11.  Please see Heidi Wright with dietary restrictions.

 

The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the following slate for Council openings to be voted on at the Spring Luncheon on May 17: VP of Membership/President-Elect: Greg Peters; VP Finance and Administration: Steve Wetherby; Members at Large: Douglas Frazier and May Welborn.  Additional nominations can be made from the floor at the Spring Luncheon.  Thank you to Margaret Clark, VP/President Elect/Nominating Committee Chair and her committee for their work in putting this slate together, and thank you to the nominees who said “yes” when the committee asked!

 

OLLI COUNCIL UPDATES

The Finance and Administration Committee has approved a fee increase for the 2016-17 academic year.  Individual course fees will rise from $50 to $55. The last time individual course fees were increased was 2010. 6-course package prices will go from $210 to $240.  9 course packages will go from $275 to $315.  15 course packages will go from $325 to $375.  This is the first increase in package prices since their inception in 2009.  These fee increases are made in response to rising expenses as OLLI continues to grow and with a view to maintaining the high standards you have come to expect of your OLLI program.  The membership fee will remain at $50. Applications are being accepted for Class 3 of Senior Leaders Greenville. Senior Leaders Greenville

(SLG) builds awareness of the essential role of seniors in the community and the critical issues they face, empowering participants to become advocates seeking better lives for seniors in Greenville, the Upstate, and beyond. SLG begins with an Orientation in August, concludes with a graduation luncheon in May, and includes nine day-long sessions with speakers, group activities, and exercises that will inform you on topics relevant to seniors. The cost is $350 and scholarships are available. Applications (due June 1) and more information are available on the OLLI Website and in the OLLI office. Questions? Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community present a variety of interesting topics.  Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110.  Bring your lunch and enjoy! May 10, Jack Fisher, nationally broadcasted disc jockey and former dancer on American Bandstand, will present “Let’s Twist Again like We Did 50 Summers Ago!”

 

“Frustrated by not getting into Friday Industrial Bonus Events?  We are seeking people interested in serving as Liaisons for the Industrial Tours and you are guaranteed a spot. An informational / training meeting will be held on Tues., May 10 from 3 – 4:30 p.m., HC004.  For questions, email Sonya Hammond.

 

Looking to improvise and play some blues, jazz or rock with other OLLI members?  Do you sing, play guitar, bass guitar, drums, sax, flute, etc.?  Then we have the jam session for you! The OLLI Consort Sig will be playing recorders in the Herring Center Lobby at 12:15 p.m. on Wed., May 11.  These are not your grandchildren’s instruments!  Join us for some fun and you will hear five different sizes of recorders and find out what a crumhorn is!

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  
This summer the Furman Art Department will be offering a number of art workshops to community members and students.  During the month of May they will kick off with a Portrait Drawing Workshop, a Watercolor from Life workshop, and figure drawing sessions.  View details here!

 

Support the Furman Baseball Team as they take on Western Carolina Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m., Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m. at Furman’s Latham Baseball Stadium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids (cash only at the stadium). Visit the website for more information!

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

What if you could save the life of someone you love by dying in his or her place? This provocative question is the premise for Sportiello’s intriguing new play, Second Chance, in Centre Stage’s provoking Fringe Series. Show dates are May 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $10/$15 and can be purchased on the website.

 

The South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association (“SCDTAA”) will be holding a seminar known as the SCDTAA Trial Academy from May 24 – May 27. They are seeking 70 volunteers to serve as jurors for the on Friday, May 27 and invite OLLI members to be involved.
