OLLI HAPPENINGS

Enjoy productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company captured live in HD from Stratford-upon-Avon. The Merchant of Venice is TONIGHT, October 16 at 7 p.m. Othello will be presented Wed., October 21 at 4 p.m. and Fri., October 30 at 7 p.m. All showings are in the Burgiss Theater in Trone Student Center. Tickets are available in the OLLI office and at the door and are $16 for OLLI members, $18 for general public.

 

At Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community will present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public. 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and invite your friends. October 20 – Lunch and Learn host will be OLLI member Reid Becker, who will present “3-D Design and Printing.”

 

Breakfast in the Furman Dining Hall! Join your OLLI friends for breakfast, 8-10 a.m., on Wednesday, October 21. Cost is just $5 for all-you-can-eat with your OLLI nametag. Choices include made-to-order omelets, fruit, breads, eggs, bacon, coffee, juice, and much more. Fix your plate and then enjoy your meal in the Faculty Dining Room, reserved that morning just for OLLI. Thanks to Linda and Tom Nowlin for hosting!

 

Get your electronic devices working better!  The Computer Technology Committee presents a Computer/ Tablet/Phone Help Desk for members Wed., Oct. 21, 2-4 p.m., HC104 – First come, first served. Bring your device and our experienced team will try to help.  These sessions help with “quick fix” problems. Due to limited time, issues requiring lengthy attention will be directed for professional service.  Contact Dan Garvin.

 

On Sat., Oct. 24, the Out and About Singles will eat at Tandem Creperie in TR at noon. Visit the shops, see the art show at the Trailblazer Park or walk the Swamp Rabbit Trail. For info or RSVP, contact Susan Cooper.

We are taking a Field Trip to the Carolinas Aviation Museum at Charlotte Douglas Airport on Friday, Nov. 6! If you remember “The Miracle on the Hudson” – US AIR Flight #1549 and its crash landing safely in the Hudson River, you will enjoy joining our When Commercial Airline Flying was Fun class members to walk around the actual Air Bus 320, view a DC9 and C130 and walk through a DC7. We will depart at 8:15 a.m. and return at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a full day which includes a museum tour, lunch and of course, a visit to the gift shop.   The trip cost is $50. Sign up in the OLLI office… space is limited.

 

Annual OLLI Thanksgiving Potluck! We are thankful for our OLLI family and we want to celebrate with you. The potluck will be held on Thanksgiving Day – Thursday Nov. 26. Stay tuned for more details!

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The Furman Theatre presents HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical on Oct. 15-17, and 21-24 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 17, 18, and 25 at 3 p.m. at the Furman Playhouse. The Music Department presents a faculty piano recital, “Songs and Dances for Left Hand Alone” with Ruby Morgan on Monday, October 19 at 8pm in Daniel Recital Hall. Free!

The High Noon lecture series continues. Talks are free and take place on Wednesdays at Noon in the Resource Room on the second floor of the Upcountry History Museum in downtown Greenville. October 21 enjoy “Revisiting Reconstruction: South Carolina and the Sesquicentennial” presented by Dr. Courtney Tollison, Furman Professor of History. For more information visit the museum website.

The Political Science department presents the next installment in its Tocqueville Lecture Series, A Conversation about Christianity and Politics with Robert P. George and Cornel R. West on Thursday, October 22 at 5 p.m. in the Watkins Room of Trone Student Center. Admission is free, but you must pick up a ticket in the student center beginning at 4 p.m. on the 22nd. The Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Minor presents a lecture by Ann Raia, Professor Emerita of Classics at the College of New Rochelle, on Wed., October 21 at 7 p.m. in McEachern Auditorium in Furman Hall. The lecture, “Exploring the Role of the Vestal Virgins in Roman Religion,” is free and open to the public.

 

Through Heller Service Corps Furman students volunteer at more than 60 agencies across SC and have made a measurable impact on the Greenville community and beyond. They are celebrating 50 years of service this month and invite the entire Furman community—including OLLI members–to join the celebration by participating in 50,000 Acts of Kindness.
