The Winter brochures are now available online and will be mailed on October 30. Registration for Winter Term will begin November 17 for course package holders and November 19 for single courses. It promises to be a great Winter Term. Thank you to our incredible committee members and instructors for building this schedule!

 

Don’t forget to sign up for Fall for OLLI next Fri., Oct. 30, 4-7 p.m. at the Herring Center. Enjoy music, food, and friends old and new, and books, artwork and crafts produced by your fellow OLLI members. You’ll see items for display AND for sale! While you are at Fall for OLLI, make sure you visit the Crabtree Room for the OLLI Photographers Showcase Reception. You’ll see amazing photography by fellow OLLI members, and you’ll have a chance to meet many of the photographers and learn more about their work.

If you have grandchildren who live nearby or visit in the summer, you’ll want to know more about this special place! Sign up in the office.

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

The OLLI Paladin Pass, your ticket to discounts and privileges across campus, will soon be available. If you enjoy $5 meals at the dining hall, use the Furman library, or play a few rounds at the Furman golf course, you’ll need one of these beginning in January. The Pass also entitles you to discounts at the Furman Fitness Center, the restaurants in the student center, the campus bookstore, and more. We will not make these automatically for all members—please sign up in the office or email carson.ruffrage@furman.edu if you’d like to receive one.

 

Enjoy productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company captured live in HD from Stratford-upon-Avon. Othello will be presented Fri., Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Burgiss Theater in Trone Student Center. Tickets are available in the OLLI office and at the door and are $16 for OLLI members, $18 for general public. There will be a special Lunch and Learn on Othello on Thursday, October 29, 12:30- 1:15 p.m. in Room 004 (Downstairs) in the Herring Center. The first showing received rave reviews from Furman students and OLLI members.

 

At Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community will present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public. 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and invite your friends. October 27 – Lunch and Learn speaker will be Megan Riegel, President & CEO of the Peace Center, who will present “An Improbable Dream Comes True… and Then Some.”

 

We are delighted to offer exclusively to OLLI @ Furman members the Road Scholar Three Presidents Trip to Charlottesville, Va.   Explore the friendship among three US President- Jefferson, Madison, Monroe – as you journey back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the time when these great men lived, worked, laughed and loved. Thanksgiving Potluck! We are thankful for our OLLI family and want to celebrate with you. Thursday, Nov. 26, we will gather at Trinity Presbyterian Church (Travelers Rest) at noon. Each person is asked to contribute $5. Let us know if you are coming so we have enough turkey. Go to Thanksgiving Pot Luck Sign Up or contact Heidi Wright  in the office for assistance signing up. The OLLI Photography SIG will be going to Old Car City in White, Georgia for a tour of a graveyard of classic cars. For more details on future outings, please contact Ray Roback.

Out and About Singles has two exciting events coming up! They will eat at Tandem Creperie in TR at noon on Sat., Oct. 24. Visit the shops, see the art show at the Trailblazer Park or walk the Swamp Rabbit Trail. For info or RSVP, contact Susan Cooper. Interested in Jamming with your Ukulele, Guitar, or whatever?  Join the OLLI Ukulele Special Interest Group on Fridays at 1:30 p.m., HC110, November 6 and 13. Bring your singing voice, instrument and music you know. We will set up in a circle and pass the mic.  If you are uncomfortable playing your own song, simply pass the mic.  If you have any questions, please contact Shelley Knee Johnson or phone 864-363-2014.

Uke Can Do Re Mi, OLLI’s very own Ukulele band, has a performance at the Woodlands at Furman on Nov. 11th at 2:30pm. Please attend to show some OLLI support for our favorite uke band!

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The High Noon lecture series continues. Talks are free and take place on Wednesdays at Noon in the Resource Room on the second floor of the Upcountry History Museum in downtown Greenville. October 28 enjoy “Translating Controversy: Theology and Politics of the Bible in English” presented by Dr. Bryan Bibb, Furman Professor of Religion. For more information visit the museum website.

 

Through Heller Service Corps Furman students volunteer at more than 60 agencies across SC and have made a measurable impact on the Greenville community and beyond. They are celebrating 50 years of service this month and invite the entire Furman community—including OLLI members–to join the celebration by participating in 50,000 Acts of Kindness. The Peace Center will host a National Geographic LIVE! Presentation on Monday, November 9, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. The show features Sam Abell and his amazing photographs that depict the images Lewis and Clark described on their historic expedition as Sam himself retraces their steps and documents it with his camera. Need to shred some paper? The City of Greenville is hosting a Free Electronics Recycling & Shredding Event on Saturday, October 24, from 10am – 2pm at the TD Convention Center Parking Lot. At this free event, citizens can dispose of unwanted electronics and have their sensitive documents destroyed and recycled in a secure manner. All paper to be shredded MUST be bagged or boxed, and each person is limited to three large trash bags or three small boxes of paper. Travelers Rest is also hosting their own Community Shred Event on Sat., Oct. 31 from 9am-noon at the History Museum of Travelers Rest.
