FUEL Meal Ideas When Dining Out

FUEL 2014 began this week!  We are excited to be working with forty new Furman faculty, staff, and spouses.

One of the first questions that I received was:

“Do any restaurants in town serve FUEL meals?”

Hmmmm… a FUEL restaurant?!  I like the sound of that!  Any entrepreneur’s out there interested?

Eating to the FUEL plate at restaurants is actually pretty simple.  The hardest part is usually finding whole grains.

Here are a few examples:

Coffeehouse Breakfast

1/2 plate Whole grain English muffin with Egg or Egg whites

1/2 plate Fresh Fruit

Breakfast at a Diner #1

Small Bowl of Oatmeal (cinnamon and a pinch of brown sugar, if desired)

Large  Portion of Fruit

Cup of Skim or 1% milk

Breakfast at a Diner #2

1/4 plate (1-2 slices) 100% Whole Grain Toast

1/4 plate (1-2) Eggs or Egg whites

1/2 plate Fresh Fruit

Breakfast on the Go

Fruit andYogurt Smoothie

Small Whole Grain Muffin (blueberry, cranberry orange, etc.)

Olive Garden

1/2 plate Shrimp Primavera (ask for whole wheat linguine)

1/2 plate Salad

Steakhouse

1/2 plate Steamed Vegetable Medley

1/4 plate Sweet Potato or Baked Potato

1/4 plate Grilled Chicken or Fish (on occasion, lean pork or steak)

Country Cooking

1/4 plate Pinto Beans

1/4 plate Green Beans and Carrots

1/4 plate Collard Greens

1/4 plate Brown Rice or Baked Potato

Chick-Fil-A

1/2 plate Grilled Chicken Sandwich on Whole Grain Bun

1/4 plate Small Salad

1/4 plate Fruit Salad

Chipotle (photo)

1/2 plate Salad with Fresh Tomatoes, Corn, and Avocado

1/4 plate Chicken, Black Beans, and/or Pinto beans

1/4 plate Brown Rice

Jason’s Deli #1

Large Salad with Grilled Salmon

Whole Grain Crackers

Jason’s Deli #2

Hummus and Vegetable Whole Grain Wrap

Salad Bar

Pizza (photo above)

1/2 plate (1-2 slices) Whole Grain Vegetable or Chicken Pizza (light on the cheese)

1/2 plate Salad

Even if you can’t make the entire FUEL plate, try to get as close as you can.  Filling half of your plate with vegetables and choosing a lean source of protein is a great foundation to a healthy meal.

What are YOUR favorite FUEL meals when dining out?  Post a comment to let us know!
