OLLI NOTES September 27, 2019
The OLLI Office is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

Celebrate the International Day of Peace on Tues, Oct. 1 at 3:15 in HC110 with Akan Malici, Furman professor of Politics and International Affairs. Many of us yearn for inner peace in our chaotic world. Dr. Malici will help us in that quest with his talk on Paths to Peace: Beyond the Guises of Our Nationalism. A concert by Rick McDaniel’s Native American Flutes will open the presentation. Sign up in the office.

As part of the International Day of Peace observance, YOU are invited to share your peace-themed poetry, photographs and other art works on the Peace Wall. Our OLLI family would love to see and hear your inspirations, visions of inner peace and peace in our community. Please leave your submission in the “Peace” basket in Heidi’s office by Oct. 15. 8×10” max. If you’d prefer no thumbtacks in the item, please provide mat.
The current OLLI parking sticker is an octagon. If you have not purchased your 2019-20 parking sticker, they are available for $10 in the OLLI office. As the office begins to enter the decal information, you may receive an email from Parking@furman.edu. This is an automatic email that you can ignore. The decal you receive, at the time that you purchase, is the only decal that is required. Once you pay in the OLLI office, you receive your parking decal and do not need anything else. Questions about parking? Contact Alise Brown.

The Travel Committee needs your input! Did you know that more than 15 OLLI members have committed themselves to researching and planning wonderful trips for OLLI members to enjoy? The OLLI Travel Committee is looking at trips ranging from day trips to 10-day international trips. Your feedback is needed to help determine what trips to explore and offer for OLLI members to enjoy. If you are interested in traveling with OLLI, please take 5 minutes and complete this survey. We can’t wait to get going!

Help a Furman student! OLLI members have worked with Dr. Michelle Horhota, Associate Dean for Mentoring and Advising, to develop a mentoring program for Furman students. The initial test was very successful for students and mentors! We are ready to expand the program with your help. Your experiences in careers, travel, and college majors are helpful to students who are making important life decisions. If you would like to serve as a mentor for a Furman student, please email Nancy Kennedy. The time commitment is minimal, but the benefits are long-lasting!

We hope you take notice of our newly cleaned carpets in the upstairs of the Herring Center. We think the carpets look great, and we need your help in maintaining their bright new look. Help us keep costs down by bringing your coffee cup with a lid from home. You are also welcome to purchase a reusable OLLI coffee cup in the OLLI Office for $12. If using one of the disposable coffee cups, please use a lid. In case of a spill, please report it to the office, so we may clean up and keep our carpet stain-free.

Snippet from Sally… Have you tried out the fabulous new bench sitting right outside the front door at the Herring Center? I understand it is the result of several of the “bus-riding folks” expressing a wish for just such a bench. I encourage you to try it out! Every time I’ve stopped for a moment I’ve met a new friend and have been reminded that “Life is like a box of chocolates…”
