TRAVEL WITH OLLI
Only 3 spots left in OLLI’s travel adventure Americans in Paris: Finding Our Revolutionary Leaders in the City of Lights, September 24 – October 4, 2019. Participants will have an opportunity to experience a unique exploration of French history and culture (in particular the rich history between the United States and France), and, of course, fine food and accommodations. If so, mark your calendar as OLLI @ Furman presents Road Scholar’s The Women of Appalachia: Traditions, Stories and Song, Sunday, October 6 – Friday, October 11, 2019. Join in our Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, where community speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and enjoy! On April 2, Bill Bradshaw, OLLI member, instructor, photographer, and avid gardener will present Light, Shadows in Seasons in the Garden.

OLLI SIG NEWS
The Travel SIG will meet Friday, April 5 at 4:30 pm in the Furman Faculty Dining Room. The topic is Cuba. This is the last meeting until fall. Any questions contact Patty Mitcham or Sarah Jerome.

The OLLI Gluten Intolerance SIG Group will hold a lunch/meeting on Apr 26 @12:30 at Grill Marks, Haywood Mall. We look forward to sharing recipes, restaurants or whatever else you would like to talk about. New and old members welcome! Please RSVP to Cindy Smithers or Anita Dutrow.

Let’s play Bocce! The OLLI Bocce SIG will meet Wednesdays at 3 p.m. during the Spring term, weather cooperative. Meet in the lobby or in the field across the drive where the Furman band practices. The Movie SIG will meet Apr 1 at 3:15 in HC103. Contact Debbie Ahlers to reserve your spot. Watch the film on your own: The Artist (2011), a silent movie in black and white, is available on Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and You Tube. Discussion will include movie facts and viewer reactions.

The Open Studio Studios SIG provides a welcoming place to work on your current painting and drawing projects with artists of all levels. Come join them on Fridays, 12:30 – 3 p.m., HC005. Contact Paula Winiski

The Outdoor Adventure SIG is open to all who love the outdoors. The group will experience adventures such as hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, cycling and other activities. The initial meeting will be Apr 4 at 3:15 p.m., HC111. What’s Going on at Furman?
The Classics Department presents Homer’s Light: The Odyssey Koan, a talk by Stanley Lombardo, translator of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Wed., April 3, 5:30 p.m., Johns Hall 101. Free and open to the public.

Furman University will host the United States Air Force (USAF) Heritage of America Concert Band in a performance Thurs, Apr 4, at 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on campus. The concert is free!

The Furman University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos will present their spring concert Fri, April 5, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. Presented by Furman Department of Music. Tickets, $5 at the door.

The Furman Percussion Ensemble will present a concert honoring the career of Furman Music Professor John Beckford Sat, April 6, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. Guests are invited onstage to an instrument ‘petting zoo’ from 7:30-7:45 p.m. Directed by Furman Percussion Professor Omar Carmenates and presented by the Furman Department of Music. Furman University Theatre presents “John Proctor is the Villain,” a new play by Kimberly Belflower in collaboration with The Farm Theater (New York), Tues, April 9,- Sat, April 13, at 8 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees on Sat, April 13, and Sun, April 14. Just weeks after leading the Furman Symphonic Winds in a performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Leslie W. Hicken will conduct the ensemble in its annual spring concert Fri, Apr 12, at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The concert marks the end of Hicken’s 26-year career as Director of Furman Bands. Tickets, $10.

For rising 1st – 8th graders, each weekly session features science, art, sports, music, games, and swimming – all on Furman’s pristine campus and under the supervision of certified teachers and instructors. Join ReUNITED for a Lunch and Learn on Thurs, Apr 18, 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities hosts a solo show by photographer Armon Means, whose work considers minority identity, cultural concerns, and environmental influences. This exhibit will feature three bodies of work—”Black Bikers,” “Inclusions,” and “North American Portraits.” Means is a professor of art at Belmont University.
