OLLI NOTES March 15, 2019

We are excited to welcome you to the Back to OLLI reception Thursday, March 21, 3-4:30 p.m. with New Member Orientation at 2:30 p.m. Plan to attend this to event to get parking passes, name tags, and general info prior to the first day of classes. Enjoy refreshments while catching up with your OLLI pals and meeting new members! While you are here, check out the latest photography display in the Crabtree Room. Many of the photographers will be on hand to talk with you about their work.

We are looking for Class Liaisons for the Spring Term! If you are interested in supporting our instructors in this way, email Pam Roberson. There will be a Class Liaison Info session and training Thursday, March 21, 1:30 p.m. in room 113. Consider attending to learn what is involved in this volunteer role.

Safety first! As you drive through the Furman campus, please be mindful of students, faculty and visitors crossing the street, especially on Milford Mall. Please yield to any walkers who are crossing. Remember that the campus-wide speed limit is 20 miles per hour in order to keep everyone safe.

Are you an OLLI Member who has a current lifeguard certificate? OLLI is always looking for certified lifeguards to help with OLLI classes that meet at the PAC pool. Please contact Alise Brown or 294-2141 if you are interested in serving as a lifeguard during any of our OLLI terms.

OLLI Curriculum Enhancement Grants: Have you always wanted to teach an OLLI course but need to do a little research or attend a class? Need the funds to do so? OLLI members can receive grants of up to $2000 for costs associated with developing a new course or modifying an existing one. Applications are available here or on the OLLI bulletin board. **Deadline March 22.** See Nancy Kennedy with questions.

Help a Furman student! OLLI members have worked with Dr. Michelle Horhota, Associate Dean for Mentoring and Advising, to develop a mentoring program for Furman students. The initial test was very successful for students and mentors! We are ready to expand the program with your help. If you would like to serve as a mentor for a Furman student, come to an informational meeting on Tue., March 26, 3 p.m. in room 004, Dr. Horhota will outline program guidelines and answer questions. Your experiences in careers, travel, places you’ve lived, college majors, and more are helpful to college students who are making important life decisions. Reservations are helpful. Spring 2019 Registration continues online and in the office. Some classes and bonus events have filled, so consider having a backup. If you are on a waitlist, please know that we are working to see where we can add people to classes. If your statement says “Registered Not Paid,” you are registered for your classes and just need to pay for the class (cash or check) the next time you are in the office. Please keep in mind that each member may sign up for two Bonus Events. If you are on a Bonus Event waitlist, you may add one more. Here are a few courses you may have missed:

Let’s play Bocce! The OLLI Bocce SIG will meet on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. during the winter term, weather cooperative. Meet in the lobby or in the field across the drive where the Furman band practices. OLLI Bowling SIG resumes Monday, March 25, 12:50 p.m. The league will last 8 weeks. Teams will be created based upon number of participants and will bowl three games each week. Weekly fees are approximately $10. On March 25 there will be an organizational meeting at 12:30, followed by league play. We meets at Bowlero, Greenville (formerly AMF Star Lanes). What’s Going on Around Greenville?

Grandchildren visiting for Spring Break? The Upcountry History Museum will explore writer illustrator Jerry Pinkney’s connection with literature and his creation of the images that bring life to a story when it hosts the Jerry Pinkney: Imaginings exhibition. The exhibit’s immersive portion invites visitors to enter a world of literacy adventures as they step into the pages of Jerry Pinkney’s books. Interactive experiences and themed reading environments take visitors on a journey through the world of classic and contemporary literature including The Jungle Book, Gulliver’s Travels, Puss in Boots, The Little Match Girl, John Henry, The Ugly Duckling and many more.
