OLLI NOTES December 7, 2018
Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement
*Don’t get caught in SNOW and ICE! In the event of inclement weather, OLLI follows the university schedule. If Furman closes, we will cancel OLLI classes, events and close the office. We will send out an email and update the message on our main number, 864-294-2998, when there is a closing. Share any “fun in the snow” pictures you may take this weekend with us; snow angels, snowmen or sledding!

OLLI Office hours are 8:30-5, Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays. The office number is 864-294-2998. The OLLI Office will be closed for the holidays December 19-January 1, 2019.

Cocoa and Carols with the Chorale! The Herring Chamber Ensemble of the Greenville Chorale will join us in Manly Lobby to present a program of seasonal music. You’ll enjoy a Christmas sing-a-long, warm drinks, yummy desserts (please bring something to share) and social time with OLLI friends Tues, Dec 11; reception at 6:30 p.m., concert at 7 p.m. Free! Coming up… Read and Explore with OLLI 2019 Kickoff! You’ve been asking, and we’re at your service. This year, you’ll have the title of our next REO selection in time to put it on your Christmas list. Watch for an announcement next week. Or join us in Manly Lobby next Thursday, Dec. 13, 2 – 4 p.m. when we’ll announce the title and begin distribution of loaner copies of the book. **Enjoy a wine tasting related to the book while you are here. Intrigued? We’re looking forward to sharing the news!

Because OLLI classes are not in session during the month of December, the Furman Dining Hall OLLI Member discount will not be available. However, you may still dine at the regular cost. The discount will return in January. Visit the website here for hours, cost and daily offerings.

As we wrap up our 25th anniversary year, and as you consider your end-of-year giving, please remember the OLLI Faculty Enrichment fund, which will help Furman faculty and students AND bring new programming to OLLI. Our goal for this endowed fund is $100,000 and we are currently at $62,858.22 in gifts and pledges. Every gift makes a difference, no matter the amount! My Friends and I, A Trio Photography Showcase presented by the Blood Connection features OLLI Members Raymond Roback, Bruce Schlein, and Alan Weinberg. Exhibit dates Nov 19- Feb 13 at 435 Woodruff Rd, Greenville. Celebrate these artists at the reception on Dec. 13, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Open to the public.

OLLI@Furman Winter 2019 Baiden Exhibit Jan 14-Mar 11, 2019. The theme is It’s a Blue Thang and offers the challenge to create images that feature the color BLUE. Put on your thinking caps and incorporate BLUE in a photograph, drawing, painting, weaving, fiber arts, etc. OLLI members and staff are invited to submit artwork. Submission dates are Dec 10-14. Please submit only ONE entry! Forms available on the OLLI website or in the OLLI Office.

What’s Going on at Furman?
Enjoy a Night out at the Furman Theatre – presenting The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, Dec 4- 8, 8p.m., with a matinee Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. Performances in The Playhouse on the Furman campus. Things to do while OLLI is not in session!
Friday, December 7 is all about Furman at MJudson Bookstore. Visit Furman on Main @ MJudson and show your Furman ID (student, faculty, or staff) or OLLI nametag and get 15% off all purchases all day. There will also be special giveaways for Paladins throughout the day.

Greenville Center for the Creative Arts Exhibition Potential and Limits: Visions in Encaustic will run from Dec 7-Jan 23, 2019 with an opening reception on Dec 7, 6-9 p.m.

Why is Africa so Poor? And Does that Impact Global Security? This lecture by Dr. Don Gordon will look back at the history of colonialism and how that set the stage for today’s situation. The fourth of our 7-part monthly America and the World Lecture Series, hosted by the World Affairs Council Upstate with Furman University. Community Volunteer Opportunity – Sevier Middle School is looking for some volunteers to serve as judges for a Shark Tank. Student groups (2-5 students) present innovative solutions to problems to a panel of volunteers who then ask students questions and provide advice on their innovation. Each group of students gets about 7 minutes to present. The Shark Tank will be held on Friday, December 14 from about 8:30 until 2:40. Volunteers should report to the main office by about 8 am. Lunch will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please contact Jami Crisman, the School Counselor and Career Development Facilitator at Sevier Middle School – jcrisman@greenville.k12.sc.us.

Centre Stage’s “Laughing All The Way” Christmas event will put you right in the Holiday spirit. Saturday Night Live meets Lawrence Welk meets The Carol Burnett Show, the ultimate variety show filled with hilarious sketches, classic tunes, and celebrated sacred songs. Warehouse Theatre presents “Christmas on the Rocks” This collection of twisted holiday tales finds your favorite children from holiday classics all grown up, getting a bit tipsy and catching up on the sordid details of their lives! Pat Conroy fans know that he was not only an amazing author, but he was also an intentional and brilliant mentor. In the course of his career, he groomed other authors in their shared craft, and many of those writers will gather at M.Judson Bookseller on Fri, Dec 14 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his influence on their lives and on the greater life of literature. It’s not often we get so much talent in one room. Here’s a list of the people who will be here: Jonathan Haupt, John Lane, Ron Rash, Nicole Seitz, Lynn Seldon, George Singleton, Ashley Warlick. Each benefited from his generosity, and contributed to the book Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. Authors will sign works of his/her own, and there will be a panel discussion.
