Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement

 

Today, September 21, is the last day to drop classes and receive a refund.  If you drop a class and switch to another, there is no fee. If you drop a class without replacing it, there is a $10 processing fee.

 

PARKING UPDATE:  Furman is in the process of changing our parking decals. In the meantime, we have a temporary parking pass for OLLI members who park away from the Herring Center (PAC, Chapel, Shi Center, etc.). OLLI members who park only in the lots around the Herring Center will not need a temporary pass. Temporary passes are available in the OLLI office or at our website. Stay tuned for more information.

Deadline October 1!  Have an idea for a new course but need to do a little research? OLLI members can receive grants of up to $2000 for costs associated with developing a new course or modifying an existing one. Application forms are available here or on the OLLI bulletin board in the Herring Center.

 

25 Years of OLLI/FULIR

Beer and Pizza Tasting 25th Anniversary Celebration We are gathering to enjoy a delicious tasting for all! Join us and sample the marvelous hand-made Upcountry Provisions Pizza and/or a tasting of select craft beers chosen by some of OLLI’s most studied beer connoisseurs! (Non-alcoholic beverages will be available for the Pizza Tasters.) $10 for either pizza or beer or $20 to give both a try. Deadline to sign up is September 27 in the OLLI office (or call 864.294.2998) for one of the tastings or both! Tuesday October 2, 5:30-8 p.m. at the Grove @ Upcountry Provisions, 6809 State Park Road, Travelers Rest.

 

Enjoy a 25th Anniversary Treat! You just might find yourself surprised between classes at the Herring Center you one day with treats on behalf of the 25th Anniversary Treat Committee. You can help! Volunteers are needed to bake or purchase treats for the table. Visit this website learn more and sign up!

OLLI HAPPENINGS

SIG Celebration Week September 24-28. Plan to get familiar by attending events throughout the week!

 

The Classic Car SIG invites all OLLI members to “Cars and Coffee” on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 9:30 – 11 a.m. in the lower parking lot (weather permitting). Stop by, check out the cars and enjoy a special snack! Questions? Contact Wayne Halli.

 

All OLLI members who have taken a meditation class or have experience with meditation are invited to join the Open Meditation SIG as we gather and practice meditation. We will meet on Mondays, 9:30 -10:30 a.m. in the Vick Seminar Room, HC102. Contact Sigrid Carpenter with questions.

 

Looking to “give back” with a flexible volunteer opportunity that utilizes your skills and interests?  Find out what your OLLI peers are doing and receive information about opportunities with 22 organizations. The Food SIG invites OLLI members to participate in Greenville Tech’s Culinary Institute of the Carolina Culinary Luncheon on Tuesday, October 16 at 12 noon.  The cost is $10/person; RSVP by Wednesday, September 26. Please contact nowo29@yahoo.com if you are interested in participating.

 

Poker Anyone? All OLLI members are invited to join the Painless Penniless Poker SIG on Wednesdays at 3:15 p.m., HC004. The group will play a variety of poker games and while some experience is necessary, all levels are welcome. And penniless means just as it sounds, we are not playing for money – only your pride is on the line! Contact Dave Knox with questions.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The Furman University Department of Music presents the Jim McNeely Jazz Trio Saturday, Sept. 22, 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. The event is open to the public. The Tocqueville Lecture Series opens Thur., Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. with a talk by Daniel DiSalvo, author and City College of New York-CUNY Associate Professor of Political Science: Has Party Reform Made America Ungovernable?. The lecture is the first in a five part series, “Love, Friendship, and Politics.”  McEachern Lecture Hall, Furman Hall 214. Free and open to the public. Furman’s Marching Band, The Paladin Regiment presents its annual Band Extravaganza Friday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium.  Enjoy the 2018 Exhibition Show “British Invasion” which explores the music of iconic rock bands of the United Kingdom. Fall for Greenville is coming October 12-14.  Furman is asking for volunteers to help out in the Furman tent.  Volunteers would work a minimum of 2 hours and will receive meal tickets for the festival.  Wear your purple!  Time slots are Saturday, October 13, 11:00 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday, October 14, Noon – 6 p.m.

What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

Meals on Wheels Do you have a 9:00 class, but not at 10:45?  If yes, you have the perfect opportunity to deliver sunshine & lunch to local homebound clients served by Meals on Wheels of Greenville County. Routes come with directions, are 8-15 stops and take about an hour. Volunteers pick up meals at First Baptist Church in Travelers Rest at 10:45. It’s more fun with a friend, so grab a friend from OLLI and share some sunshine. Interested? Science on Tap Greenville is Tuesday, Sept 25, 6:30 pm at Coffee Underground. The presenter will be Dieter Hartmann, Department of Physics and Astronomy for Clemson University.  As always, Science on Tap is free and open to the public. Tell your friends and colleagues!

 

S.C. Voter Registration is open through October 5, 2018.  In order to vote as a resident of the state of South Carolina in the upcoming midterm elections, you must submit your application form by this date.  Applications are available in the OLLI Book Nook Library.  Please note: your address on your valid photo identification and voter identification must match when you sign in at the polls on Election Day.

 

The Guild of the Greenville Symphony presents the 2018 Harvest of Homes Tour, on October 5-6 10:00-4:00 p.m. and October 7, 1:00-4:00 p.m.  All proceeds benefit the Greenville Symphony. Advance tickets $25, tour day tickets $30. For more information call 864-370-0965 or visit the Guild website.
