OLLI NOTES              June 29, 2018

Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement

Happy Summer!  We enjoyed seeing those of you who participated in the summer term, and hope you enjoyed it.  This is the last OLLI Notes until mid-August.  Read on for some fun things to do this summer while OLLI is on vacation.  Please note the OLLI Office is open by appointment only in July.  Please call before dropping by to make sure someone is here (864.294.2998).

***While there is usually no OLLI programming in July, here’s an opportunity that was too good to pass up, offered to OLLI by Furman Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences Brannon Anderson.  Join us for How the West was Won and Where it Got Us: Sustainability Stories from the Edge of Europe on Friday, July 6 at 10 a.m. in the Crabtree Room.  Dr. Anderson and two colleagues from Croatia have been collaborating over the past two years on a research project that included two Furman students.  Their work applies Kate Raworth’s “doughnut economics” model at the national level to develop pathways to sustainability.  They have been using Croatia as the initial case study but are expanding to other countries.   Dr. Mladen Domazet is the Director of Research at the Institute of Political Ecology and Mr. Branko Ancic is a research scientist at the Institute of Social Research, both in Zagreb, Croatia.  This one-hour event will include a short presentation and time for questions and discussion.  Reservations are helpful so we know how many to expect.  Call the office at 864-294-2998 or email Nancy Kennedy.  Free!

Plan Ahead:  The Fall 2018 brochure will be posted on our website July 20, and mailed July 27.  Fall registration begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday, August 14 for those purchasing course packages and Thursday, August 16 for all others.  We will open pre-registration the week prior (watch your email for details) so that you can purchase your membership and package ahead of time if you want.

Don’t toss your OLLI nametag!  If you have a nametag, please save it for next year.  We are happy to make new nametags in case of loss or damage, but it saves time and money if you use yours year after year.

The Furman Dining Hall is open through the summer, but remember there is no OLLI discount at the dining hall in July, August, or December, or on any weekend.  OLLI members are still welcome to enjoy the dining hall during the “off” months and on the weekends, but will be asked to pay full price.

25 Years of OLLI/FULIR

A special Music by the Lake Concert! In recognition of FULIR/OLLI’s 25th Anniversary and the 50th Anniversary of the Music by the Lake Concert Series, join us for a special OLLI gathering on Thursday, July 19. The concert begins at 7:30.  Come early to sit with your OLLI friends (area reserved until 7 p.m.—bring your own chair) and enjoy cake and lemonade at the OLLI tent.  RSVPs are helpful; call the office or email Nancy Kennedy to sign up.  Thanks to Carroll and Steve Luck and their committee for planning this fun event!

Here’s a great way to help Furman professors, Furman students, AND OLLI!  At the Annual Luncheon, OLLI Council President May Welborn announced a campaign to raise $100,000 to endow the OLLI Faculty Support Fund.  Income from this endowment will provide funds each year for a Furman professor to pursue research or scholarship that will enhance their classroom teaching.  Projects that involve a Furman student will be encouraged, and faculty will be required to give a Bonus Event or something similar at OLLI sharing their research with our membership.  Our gifts and pledges total continues to rise:  we are now at $41,400!  All gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the IRS.  You may make a one-time gift via credit card by clicking this link.  If you would like to make a pledge to pay later on, or a multi-year pledge, you can download this form, or pick one up in the OLLI Office.  If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Kennedy at 864-294-2979 or nancy.kennedy2767@furman.edu.
