OLLI NOTES              August 18, 2017

The OLLI Office is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

Fall registration continues! We sincerely hope registration went well for all of those who registered this week. Please refer to your confirmation e-mail and note the “class status” for the courses for which you registered (registered, registered not paid, waitlist). For anyone showing a “registered not paid” status, you are registered for the course.  (You may have been “waitlisted” for a course and we have a check we cannot deposit until you get into the course or you are mailing us payment.)

**If you are on a waitlist, please know that we are working on those.  Any time we can let more people into a class, we do.  It all depends on space in the room, instructor preference, the number of drops for that class, and/or whether we can move to a different room.  You will get a call from the office if a space opens up for you.**

If you are brand-new member, we will make a nametag for you, which you can pick up at the New Member Orientation OR at your first class.  The same is true for parking passes.  All OLLI members will receive parking passes at Back to OLLI or your first class.  There is no need to make a special trip out to the office for your nametag or parking sticker.  Returning OLLI members, please use the nametag you already have.

In order to ensure that all of our members can enjoy our free Friday bonus events, members can only sign up for TWO bonus trips or events during the initial registration period.  Throughout the term, we will publish bonus trip and event openings each week in OLLI Notes; at that point, all members will be eligible to sign up.

Stop by the office to pick up OLLI Brochures to share with friends, neighbors and at spots around town. YOU are our best advertisement.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Are you ready for the eclipse?

  1. Furman University is hosting a free event in Paladin Stadium, 12-3 p.m. From Noon until 2 p.m., there will be tents with hands-on exhibits, free water stations, and concessions for sale.  At 2 p.m., everyone will take seats in the stadium, where Furman Professor and astronomer David Moffett will narrate what you are seeing.  The Furman band will provide appropriate background music.  Free eclipse glasses to the first 8,000 participants, and free parking.  If you are bringing grandchildren, this is the event for you.   Learn more on the Furman website.
  2. Those registered for the OLLI eclipse event should have received a separate informational email.
  3. Enjoy the event from the comfort of your own home. Greenville is expecting a large number of tourists that day, and officials expect heavy traffic.
  4. If you are inspired by the events, OLLI writing instructor Bill Burns encourages you to put it on paper. Write a poem, and send it in to OLLI.  We’d love to see your work, and may even publish a collection of poems if we have enough submissions.

We have enjoyed wonderful response for the upcoming Straight Talk summer lecture series, Media and Politics in a Post-Truth Era, presented by OLLI and the Riley Institute at Furman. We are at capacity for series tickets as well as single sessions on Aug. 24 and September 7. We will be learning about fake news:  where it comes from, why we believe it, how to guard against it, and what is being done to slow its spread.  You can learn more and register online (credit card fees apply) here.  You may also register with cash or check in the OLLI office.
