The OLLI office will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day.

Summer hours: The OLLI office will be open 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. during the summer.

***Thursday and Friday, June 1-2, there will be high school graduations held at Timmons Arena. There will be a lot of traffic and little to no parking near the Herring Center. These are not good days to drop by the office.***

Congratulations to John Bissell, named Volunteer of the Year at the OLLI spring luncheon.  John is a past member of the Volunteer Committee and current serves on the Computers and Technology subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee.  He works to bring new courses and new instructors in for computer courses, and is a frequent class liaison, going above and beyond for two classes held in Daniel Recital Hall, where he handles sound, lights, and elevator assistance.  Thanks for all that you do John!

OLLI HAPPENINGS

The Bowling SIG will not be bowling in a league format during the summer but a number of us will purchase AMF’s Summer “Season Pass” and bowling at the following times: Mondays 12 noon, beginning May 22, and Tuesdays at 11:00 AM beginning May 30. Contact Michael Halloran with questions. FYI, the season pass is $30 plus tax and allows you to bowl three games every day (with shoes!) from May 22 through September 4.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The Greenville Scottish Games will be held this Saturday, May 27 on Furman’s campus on the rugby field near the Herring Center! The gates open at 8:30 a.m. and the day will be filled with competitions, food, entertainment and more. Bridges to a Brighter Future, a program for high school students whose potential outdistances their circumstances, will hold their Career Expo on June 20, 7-9 p.m., on Furman’s campus.  Organizers are looking for volunteers willing to talk to students about their own careers.  If you are interested in participating, please sign up on this Google Doc.  For more information, contact Dean Bailey, Bridges Assistant Director.

 

Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series, a Greenville tradition since 1968, runs Thursday evenings through August 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s amphitheater. On June 1, enjoy Creatures Great and Small performed by the Carolina Youth Symphony. Learn more about the Summer Concert Series here.

 

What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

The Upstate Winds Concert Band invites you to join them for the indoor concert at Mauldin First Baptist Church on Saturday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m. (dinner provided)  They will also perform on Sunday, May 28, at Furman’s Lakeside Amphitheater at 3:00 p.m.  Bring your lawn chairs, picnic basket, and enjoy the patriotic program. Clemson University’s Science on Tap will host Maria Whitehead, who will discuss “Building Resilience in the Southeast”— a discussion of land use and climate change on Tuesday, May 30 at 6 p.m. at Coffee Underground in downtown Greenville. Questions? Check the website for more information.

 

The Rotary Club of Greenville has established a satellite club that meets at the Woodlands at Furman at 9 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month.  OLLI members are invited to attend.  Upcoming speakers are State Senator William Timmons on June 1 and Furman Vice President Mary Lou Merkt on June 15. For more information contact OLLI member and Woodland Rotary Chair Angelo Tartaro.

The Guild of the Greenville Symphony will sponsor its first ever summer social event—the 2017 Boots and Bandanas, on Thursday, June 8, 2017, 5-9 p.m. at the Lindsey Plantation, 750 Camp Creek Road, Taylors, SC.  The Guild promises an exciting evening of great BBQ pork and chicken with all your favorite sides, wine and craft beer, bourbon tasting, and country music featuring the West End String Band providing an opportunity to dance the night away.  Proceeds from the event will support the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.  Tickets are $65.  For more information and to purchase tickets, call the Guild office at 864 370-0965 or visit our website, www.guildGSO.org.
