‘Tis the Season!

 

Registration continues online and in the office. Some classes and bonus events have filled, so please consider having a backup. If you are on a waitlist, we will call you if a spot opens up.  Each member may sign up for two Bonus Events.  If you are on a Bonus Event waitlist, you can add one more.

 

Looking for another course?  Here are a few to consider: Business Now and Then with instructors Bob Dwyer, Bing Vick, George Hammond and more (M, 1:30 p.m.), Beginner’s Volleyball Skills (TH, 9 a.m.), Beginning Computer (W, 3:15 p.m.), Be a Poem with Sayeh Saeedi (TH, 10:45 a.m.), and Explore the Baha’i Faith (TH, 9 a.m.). OLLI Cocoa and Carols with the Chorale! Members of the Greenville Chorale will join us in Manly Lobby.  They will present a program of seasonal music.  You’ll also enjoy a Christmas sing-a-long, warm drinks, yummy desserts (please bring something to share) and social time with OLLI friends on Tuesday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m.  Free!  Reservations are helpful. Call the office (294-2998) to let us know you’ll be there.

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

It’s not too late to be part of our annual Christmas Caroling on Tuesday, December 6 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Greenville East. We’ll meet at OLLI for rehearsal at 1 p.m., carpool to Heartland and perform 3:15-4:15 p.m. This has been an enjoyable event for several years, and we welcome former and new singers. Gloria Larkin leads the singing and Connie Kane-Maguire helps organize. For more information, please contact Connie or 271-8544.  It is important for us to know in advance how many will be there to sing.

 

Join OLLI instructor Justin Smith, financial advisor with Edward Jones Investments, on Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. to hear the top IRA mistakes as well as discussion about the new DOL Fiduciary Rule change. Please let us know you are coming by calling the OLLI office at 864.294.2998.

 

LAST CALL FOR PHOTOS – OLLI Winter Photography Showcase: We hope you are enjoying the OLLI@Furman Photography Showcase in Room 110 of the Herring Center, featuring images taken by OLLI members during photography classes. The next exhibition begins in Jan.; the theme is FALL COLOR. Pictures may have been taken any time and place. OLLI members should send your name, artwork title, email address, and a digital copy (med. sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com by Dec. 5.  One submission per artist please.  Guidelines available at the OLLI office or via email.

 

OLLI @ Furman Winter Term Baiden Wall exhibit, “Pretty Posies,” will be January 16 – March 10. Submission dates are December 5 – 16. All forms of artwork are eligible for this exhibit including photography, paintings, drawing, fabric art, woodworking, etc, provided they contain the theme of “Pretty Posies”. Meaning flowers or any flower motif. Each 2 dimensional entry must be matted and framed. Hanging wire is required on all entries. No saw tooth hangers, please. Quilts and large fabric/yarn items should be capable of being hung on the wall. Smaller and freestanding items will be displayed in glass cases. About the Osher National Survey – We have received the results of the Osher National Survey and we had a response rate of 42% for OLLI at Furman. There were almost 900 written responses to the two open ended questions on the survey. The Long Range Planning Committee will be reviewing the results of the survey to identify important demographic data, trends from previous surveys, and opportunities for improvement. Once complete, the Committee will share the results with the OLLI Council and the Membership

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

The Furman University Symphony Orchestra, the Furman Singers and Furman Men’s and Women’s Chorales will present “Christmas at Furman” Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The concert is open to the public and tickets for the Sound Quality Concert Series event are $10.

 

Support the Furman Men’s Rugby Team in the National Semi-Finals on Saturday, Dec. 3 @ 11:00 a.m., Roberts Rugby Pitch (across from Timmons) as they take on Minnesota-Duluth.

 

Furman University will host its annual Moravian Christmas Love Feast service Sunday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. in Daniel Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public, and is presented by Furman’s Office of the Chaplains. Visit the website to learn more.

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

Christmas with the Chorale – Greenville Chorale’s 35th annual family Christmas concert is Friday, December 9, 7:30 pm in McAlister Auditorium.   The Chorale, led by Bing Vick, is joined by the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Joiner, conductor. An evening of beautiful and exciting sounds of the season – carols, Nutcracker excerpts, “12 Days of Christmas”, Santa Claus, and more. OLLI discount is 20% for tickets. $30 ticket for only $24 in the OLLI office. Open seating, so come early and pick your seat. Merry Christmas!

Alyson Amato, OLLI’s Movement Makers instructor, has arranged for OLLI members to attend the International Ballet’s The Nutcracker at a heavily reduced rate of $18 per ticket Orchestra Level. This Outreach Performance is Fri., Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peace Center. Reserve tickets at the OLLI Front Desk with cash or check made out to CDC. All tickets will be distributed the day of the performance in the Concert Hall Foyer 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance. Email Alyson with questions.

 

The Greenville Little Theatre presents “Miracle on 34th Street” Dec. 8-10, 15-17 at 8 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees Dec. 11 & 18. Also playing is “Jingle All The Way” on December 13-17 at 10:30 a.m. or Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. For tickets for either show order on the website or call 864-233-6238.

 

The Upcountry History Museum – Furman University, in partnership with the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts is currently hosting the traveling exhibition Norman Rockwell’s Home for the Holidays. This beloved exhibition, featuring over 40 of Norman Rockwell’s most memorable and enduring holiday images, is now making its South Carolina debut at the Upcountry History Museum.
