On April 20 Furman will be host the Special Olympics. Our parking lot will be full.  We are moving many of the morning OLLI courses to other locations that day (list follows).  If you class is NOT on this list, you will have class in the Herring Center as usual. A limited number of parking spaces will be reserved for OLLI class participants in from of the Herring Center. All others should enter campus through the front gate, as you will not be able to access the main campus from our parking lot that morning. Please call the OLLI office with any questions. Thank you for your patience and support as Furman hosts these special athletes!

ACM128 Yet Again, More Feisty Women will not meet.

All 1:30 p.m. classes will begin at 1:45 p.m.

 

A Meet and Greet with Furman Athletes and Coaches just for you!  Thur., April 21, 12:30–1:15 p.m., representatives from various Furman athletic teams will be in Manly Lobby of the Herring Center to share some time with our OLLI members.  Please come meet these gifted athletes and coaches and congratulate them on their success as they continue to lead the Southern Conference in many sports!

 

Applications are being accepted for Class 3 of Senior Leaders Greenville. Senior Leaders Greenville (SLG) builds awareness of the essential role of seniors in the community and the critical issues they face, empowering participants to become advocates seeking better lives for seniors in Greenville, the Upstate, and beyond. SLG begins with an Orientation in August, concludes with a graduation luncheon in May, and includes nine day-long sessions with speakers, group activities, and exercises that will inform you on topics relevant to seniors. As you identify opportunities and challenges faced by the senior population, you will be encouraged to bring your unique talents, wisdom, and skills to generate ideas for advocacy, collaboration, and creative solutions. The cost is $350 and scholarships are available. Applications (due June 1) and more information are available on the OLLI Website and in the OLLI office. Questions? Students participating in OLLI’s Senior Leaders Greenville and Dynamic Aging programs have developed an initiative to make it easy for you to find the right match for meaningfully engagement in the community.  Learn about the benefits of being engaged and hear from several OLLI peers about their volunteer experiences.

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

The next meeting of the Travel SIG is TONIGHT, Fri., April 15 at 4:30 pm at the clubhouse at Ravines of Camellia, 101 High Hat Circle (just off Duncan Chapel Road about a mile from the Herring Center).  We’ll discuss the date for the next meeting, whether we would like a guest speaker for travel ideas and methods for communicating questions and advice among members between meetings.

 

OLLI and several community partners present “The Age of Love,” a documentary offering a funny and poignant look at the adventures of 30 Rochester, NY seniors who sign up for a first-of its-kind speed dating event for 70- to 90-year-olds.  Tuesday, May 3, at the Younts Center at Furman.  Doors open at 3 p.m.; screening begins at 3:30. The filmmaker and Dr. Michelle Horhota will lead a discussion following the screening, and the event concludes with a wine and cheese reception.  (Follow the signs to Timmons Arena.) This event is FREE, but pre-registration is required hereFor more information about the film, visit the website.

 

Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community present a variety of interesting topics.  Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110.  Bring your lunch and enjoy! April 19, Beth Padgett, Executive Director of Compass Carolina and former editor for The Greenville News will be speaking on Almost 100 Years in Serving the Underserved in our Community (NFL Players and Their Families Are Not the Only Ones Having Issues Domestically).

What happens when 7 people who belong to a writer’s group discover shocking secrets about each other? Will they ever get past the dreaded writer’s block that keeps them from putting their stories on paper?  Will any of them ever be published?  From the uptight professor trying to get tenure, to the dizzy blonde who hears voices in her head, to the pencil chewing romantic, they all have their problems.  Add a dash of music, and you’ve got Writers Bloc, an original musical presented by OLLI’s latest SIG group: OLLI Onstage. Come join us fun on April 30 at 8 p.m. or May 1 at 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale in the OLLI Office, $6 in advance / $8 at the door!  Note: Writer’s Bloc contains adult material.  Not suitable for children.

 

Get your electronic devices working better!  The Computer Technology Committee will offer a Computer/ Tablet/Phone Help Desk for members Tues., April 19, 1-4 p.m., HC104 – First come, first served. A special congratulations to Gordon Dohm, Brenda Hill, Midge Jones and Ali Van Den Broek who all had photos selected for the juried show at Anderson Arts Center.  The show runs April 15 – May 27.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The Furman Symphony Orchestra and the Furman Singers and Chorales will present their Spring Oratorio Concert with a program featuring Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances from Prince Igor on Friday April 15 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium.

Native Plant Sale!  Saturday April 16 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. the SC Native Plant Society’s spring native plant sale will feature over 150 types of native wildflowers, shrubs, trees, ferns and grasses. The sale will be held at Conestee Park, 840 Mauldin Road in Greenville, next to the baseball stadium.
