Winter Term 2016 is coming to an end. Thank you to our instructors for another great round of classes! Remember that Spring 2016 Registration continues. Please pick up copies of the Spring Brochure to share with friends, neighbors and places you frequent around town. YOU are our best marketing tool!

The OLLI Office is open regular hours the next two weeks, but Furman students are on spring break through March 13. Therefore, the Dining Hall and the restaurants in the student center will be closed next week.

Course evaluation time is here! You have the opportunity to provide us with feedback on each of your course experiences. This online evaluation will take 5 minutes and provide great input to your instructors. (Paper copies are available in the OLLI Office.) Following are the links to complete your evaluations online:

Are you interested in serving as a leader of OLLI? Do you know someone who would be a great OLLI Council member? As required by OLLI’s Bylaws, Margaret Clark, VP of Membership/President Elect, chairs the Nominating Committee and has chosen the following committee members: Jim Smeaton, Christine Robb, Sandy Roback and Rich Pouliot. The Nominating Committee requests suggestions from you for four openings on the 2016-17 Council. Submit your suggestions through this online survey. Paper copies of the form are available in the office. We invite you to speak with any of the Committee members as well. Deadline March 18.

The History Committee is exploring topics for development as an OLLI Class, including WWII Generals; Teddy Roosevelt and His Era; 8 Least Known US Presidents; Inventors and their Inventions; US Gangsters. If you are interested in developing any of these as part of an OLLI class, please email Nancy Gammons or call 834-1940.

Have old papers or documents that need shredding? As part of National Consumer Protection Week the SC Dept. of Consumer Affairs will host a Shred Day right here at OLLI (in the parking lot adjacent to Timmons Arena) on Tuesday, March 8 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Limit 5 file boxes.

WEARING OF THE GREEN – Welcome Spring at OLLI’s St. Patrick’s Day Lunch March 17, 11:30 a.m. at the Herring Center. Join OLLI friends for a traditional corned beef and cabbage lunch. Hoist a pint of beer while enjoying Gaelic entertainment followed by an old fashioned sing-along. The cost is $13 per person. Space is limited; make your reservations in the OLLI office.

How about a Bowling Special Interest Group? This league would meet Mondays, 12:45-3:15 p.m., March 14-May 16. The league is “10 for 10”—bowl 10 weeks for $10 per week and upon completion you receive your own selected T-Zone weight appropriate bowling ball with finger holes drilled for your hand. The league will be unsanctioned (no awards) and handicapped (no matter your average your handicap will make your score competitive), so there are no bad bowlers! Interested? E-mail Michael Halloran.

Anyone who does any kind of handwork (knitting, crochet, etc.) is invited to join the Swamp Rabbit Knitters, 10 a.m. – 12 noon on Wednesday mornings in front of the fireplace. Questions? Contact Gail Kirby.

An informal committee of OLLI members is examining ways to facilitate meaningful engagement of OLLI members as volunteers with local organizations, commissions, causes, etc. Such engagement has the potential to improve our own quality of life and that of our community. Thanks to everyone who submitted artwork for the Seasons exhibit in the Baiden Gallery. The next showcase will present 3D works of art or crafts from OLLI students and instructors March 21-May 20. The art committee welcomes pieces from the woodcarving, basketry, knitting, crochet, mosaics, jewelry, art glass, weaving, leathercraft, and quilting classes. OLLI@Furman Spring Photography Showcase – Call for Photos! We hope you are enjoying the Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room. The fourth exhibition will go up in April. If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate send your name, title of your artwork, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com. There is no theme and very few restrictions. Submissions due March 18. Only one submission per artist please. A copy of the guidelines can be picked up at the office or by request to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?
The Greenville Jewish Federation is proud to present Susan and Lloyd Ecker’s exciting new documentary, “The Outrageous Sophie Tucker” at Younts Conference Center, Sunday, March 6, 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door; seating is first-come first-served.

The Furman University Men’s Lacrosse Team invites YOU to their game with Penn State, Tues., March 8 at 12 p.m. in Paladin Stadium. This is a Brown Bag Game Day Lunch, so bring your lunch and enjoy the game with other faculty, students, and coaches or grab lunch at concessions. Furman students are on Spring Break, so the team needs YOU to cheer them on!

The Special Collections Department of the Furman Library invites to you to an informal viewing of a group of recent acquisitions on March 16 at 3 p.m., Pitts Room, James B. Duke Library. The viewing includes a small archive from a British WWII conscientious objector; 3 Anglo-Indian works not represented in any North American libraries; a Chinese missionary photo album from the early 20th century; examples of contemporary book art; the Pennyroyal Caxton Bible; a set of Dickens’s Mystery of Edwin Drood in original parts; 2 18th-century American almanacs; and the first book of poetry (1880) about the bicycle, and more.
