OLLI NOTES         October 2, 2015

 

Greenlink Bus Service coming to OLLI! A new Greenlink bus stop at the Herring Center will begin on Monday, October 5, 2015!  Route #3 will come right through campus and stop on the road next to the Herring Center parking lot at approximately 5-10 minutes before each hour (look for the new bench and sign).  This bus arrives at the Greenlink Transfer Center at approximately 25 minutes past the hour and leaves the Center for the return trip to Furman immediately after each half hour.  The Transfer Center is located in downtown Greenville between McBee and Washington Streets and is one block from Main Street.  One-way fare for seniors is 75 cents.  Transfers are an additional 25 cents.  If you know of someone who needs transportation to be able to come to OLLI, this might be just what they were waiting for. Give it a try and spread the word!

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Tryouts for an original OLLI musical comedy to be produced this spring! How would you like to portray a frustrated writer trying to get published?  Include some delightful songs, and you have the original play Writers Bloc.  For vocal tryouts, be prepared to sing a few bars of your favorite show tune, hymn, or just sing Happy Birthday.   Be ready to read a few lines from the play – copies will be provided. Singing roles: 3 males, 4 females.  1 non-singing female roll.  Tryouts will be held on October 5 & 8 from 3:15 to 5 PM in HC005.  For further information contact Jim D’Amato at jdamato53@gmail.com.

 

At Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community will present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public. 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and invite your friends. October 6 – Lunch and Learn host will be President of Greenville Tech Foundation, Bob Howard, who will present “From Textiles to Technology in 50 Years.”

 

Royal Shakespeare Company’s captured live in HD from Stratford-upon-Avon of their current play, The Merchant of Venice, will be presented on Wednesday, October 7 at 4 p.m. and Fri, Oct 16 at 7 p.m. in the Burgiss Theatre in the Trone Student Center.  Tickets are now on sale at the OLLI Office.  OLLI member tickets are $16 and $18 for non-members. To prepare for The Merchant of Venice screening, come to a lunch and learn on Monday, October 5, 12:30-1:15 p.m. in HC005, hosted by OLLI member Dennis Tavernetti.

 

Fall for OLLI will be held on Fri., Oct. 30 from 4-7 p.m. at the Herring Center. The event will give OLLI members an opportunity to share time together as we enjoy music, refreshments and celebrate the talents of our OLLI authors and artists! OLLI artists and authors, we need you! Come share your talents with OLLI members at Fall for OLLI.  Artists and authors are invited to display and/or sell their work.  Registration forms are available in the office.   Contact Heidi Wright with questions.

 

Dr. Kristin Stultz Pressley, a Furman alum and musical theatre historian, will give an historic overview of the American musical Hair with “Untangling HAIR: Combing Through the Show’s Massive Impact on Musical Theatre History” on Thursday, October 8, 3:15 p.m., HC110. Landmark shows from “Show Boat” to “Oklahoma” will be discussed in an effort to illustrate the “new age” ushered in with the 1968 premiere of Hair. Learn how Hair shattered long-held traditions, as well as how it made its way to Broadway to begin with. The hour-long session will conclude with time for Q&A. Free!

 

We are taking a Field Trip to the Carolina’s Aviation Museum at Charlotte Douglas Airport on Friday, Nov. 6! If you remember “The Miracle on the Hudson” – US AIR Flight #1549 and its crash landing safely in the Hudson River, you will enjoy joining our “When Commercial Airline Flying was Fun” class members to walk around the actual Air Bus 320, view a DC9 and C130 and walk through a DC7. We will depart at 8:15 a.m. and return at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a full day which includes a museum tour, lunch and of course, a visit to the gift shop.   The trip cost is $50. Sign up in the OLLI office… space is limited.

The Woodcarving SIG invites OLLI artists of all mediums to join them for an Artist Open Studio on Fridays from 1-4 p.m., HC005. As with all SIGs there will be no instruction, but an opportunity for exchange and interaction among artists of varying art mediums.

Stop by Starbucks in Simpsonville (657 Fairview Road, exit 27 off I-385) to view an exhibit of our very own OLLI Pen and Ink students. Artwork will be on display through October.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Fall for Greenville Volunteers are needed to man the Furman tent, October 9-11.  Wear purple and welcome people as they come to the Furman tent! Shifts are a minimum of 2 hours on Fri., Oct 9 (5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.); Sat., Oct 10 (12:00 noon. – 8:00 p.m.) and Sun., Oct 11 (12:30 p.m. –6:00 p.m.). All volunteers will receive festival meal tickets and access to the VIP area. Contact Chandra Dillard at 294-2503 if you can help.

 

The Furman Theatre presents HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical on Friday, Oct. 15, 17, 21 & 24 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 17, 18 & 25 at 3 p.m. at the Furman Playhouse. The High Noon lecture series is back! All talks are free and take place on Wednesdays at Noon in the Resource Room on the second floor of the Upcountry History Museum in downtown Greenville. The Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection and Triune Mercy Center present Learning to Live in My Own House: The Sacred Vocation of Becoming Myself on Sat., Oct. 10, 9-Noon. The Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Minor presents a lecture by Ann Raia, Professor Emerita of Classics at the College of New Rochelle, on Wed., October 21 at 7 p.m. in McEachern Auditorium in Furman Hall. The lecture, “Exploring the Role of the Vestal Virgins in Roman Religion,” is free and open to the public.

Fiction Addiction brings bestselling author S.C. Greenville Chorale and Greenville Symphony Orchestra: SERENADE AND SONGS,

conducted by OLLI member (and instructor) Bing Vick, will be at the Peace Center on Saturday, October 24. Special discounted ticket vouchers for OLLI members: $32 (20% discount) are available in the OLLI office. This will be THE EXCITING CONCERT of the season for all. (Voucher must be exchanged for your reserved seat at the Peace Center Box Office).

 

OLLI member Charlene Vohs is featured in an exhibit on “The History of Greer” through 15 watercolor paintings at the Greer City Building. Go check out your fellow OLLI member’s artwork!
