 Your Search for Black History Continues Here…The Furman University Libraries have an extensive collection of databases on the African American, African and African Diaspora experiences, histories and cultures. Many of these collections are repositories of primary source materials including, letters, artifacts, pamphlets, obituaries, etc. There’s much to explore and examine.   Immerse yourself in collection every day this February! 

Day #1

Black Historical Newspapers (ProQuest Historical Newspapers) 

We are starting the month off with a bang!  Black Historical Newspapers, part of the ProQuest Historical Newspapers collection, contains the major black newspapers of the 20th century.  Included are: 

  • Atlanta Daily World—1931-2010 
  • The Baltimore Afro-American—1893-2010 
  • Chicago Defender—1910-2010 
  • Cleveland Call & Post—1934-2010 
  • Kansas City Call – 1919-2010 
  • Los Angeles Sentinel—1934-2010 
  • Louisville Defender – 1951-2010 
  • Michigan Chronicle—1939-2010
  • New York Amsterdam News—1922-2010
  • The Norfolk Journal & Guide—1916-2010 
  • The Philadelphia Tribune—1912-2010 
  • Pittsburgh Courier—1911-2010 

There are some significant gaps and dates of coverage vary by title but you have the ability to search across multiple newspapers.  This collection of 12 newspapers provides researchers with access to perspectives and information that was excluded or marginalized in mainstream sources.  Article images are in pdf format and include obituaries, editorials, advertising and photographs.
