LibDEI: Black History 2023 Day 15 – Grenada

Population: 113,949

National Motto: “Ever conscious of God we aspire, build and advance as one people.”

Grenada is the home of the world’s first underwater sculpture park. The sculptures are developed with concrete and rebar, and are placed naturally without affecting the natural reef and the lives of its inhabitants adversely. [above]

Grenada is known as the Spice Isle. Nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice, bay leaves, and turmeric are some of the spices you can find on this island which is also their top exports (there’s even a little nutmeg on its flag!) Did you know nutmeg trees take 20 years to mature?

Greetings matter in Grenada – not greeting people you encounter is considered rude.

The official national anthem is “Hail Grenada” “Hélé LaGwinad!”:

Hail! Grenada, land of ours,
We pledge ourselves to thee,
Heads, hearts and hands in unity
To reach our destiny.
Ever conscious of God,
Being proud of our heritage,
May we with faith and courage
Aspire, build, advance
As one people, one family.
God bless our nation.
