Ye Olde Debate at Furman College: Civility in Perspective
The Furman Debate Society teams up with the Furman Library’s Special Collections to host a debate modeled after the 19th century Philosophian and Adelphian Literary Societies at Furman. Members of the Debate Society will debate a resolution pulled straight from the minute books of these societies. “Is dancing an evil?” “Does the end ever justify the means?” “Should women receive as thorough an education as a man?” “Is the pen mightier than the sword?” “Does memory or hope give more pleasure to man?”
Following, there will be a panel discussion on the history of the Adelphian and Philosophian Societies at Furman, the broader historical context of college literary societies and the elocutionary movement throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and the current state of civil discourse especially in and among student groups on college campuses, including Furman.
