PSA: Why You Need APO (A Co-ed Service Fraternity) In Your Life

I don’t know you, but I already know what you’re thinking – there are a million and one sororities and fraternities here on campus. Chances are, whoever you are, you are already part of the 60% of students at Furman who are active members of a sorority or fraternity in the Greek system. You probably love your XYZ sorority/fraternity and the x129038192 glamorous social events it offers – and that’s great! But you can’t help wonder what else the campus has to offer or what other groups you can join. What about, perhaps, an organization where you can make even more friends, get the opportunity to challenge yourself in a new leadership role, and most importantly – do some good service for the community?

Enter Alpha Eta Nu, the chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at Furman University.

Let me proceed to tell you why you should consider joining this amazing group of wonderfully wacky people:

1. Alpha Phi Omega lets you do you.

This is by far one of my favorite things about this fraternity – you can join as many other organizations as you see fit, in addition to APO. APO loves people who are committed to the organization, but also understands you may have other interests in life. Just maybe.

2. Meet other people who share your love of doing service.

There are plenty of good people in the world, but not everyone enjoys getting their hands dirty on a saturday morning and raising roofs (literally) at a Habitat build – and that’s totally okay. But sometimes, it’s easier to become motivated and excited about doing good things in the world when you join a group of people who are equally as passionate about it as you are. Thats my opinion, anyway.

3. APO is the only organization on campus where you can participate in x101283423 different service projects a year.

Okay, so the number is more like 20. But really, our service events include everything from tutoring under-resourced children at Frazee Dream Center to driving around campus in a super fun century-old truck collecting glass for recycling, to hanging out with adorable rescued puppies at the Greenville Humane Society.

4. Diversity (but actually)

Majors wise, we actually have pretty much every department covered. History, Math, Chemistry, Sustainability, Philosophy, Religion, Art, Communications, Accounting, Biology and Urban Studies to name a few. And we also represent quite a few ethnicities and countries from around the world. I can’t tell you exact numbers because ugh math, so here is a picture for your reference:

’nuff said, am I right?

5. Casually be a part of the largest fraternity in the country (And in the Philippines too)

If I have learned anything during the last year here it’s network, network, network and network some more until you can’t even. APO is great for that, because it boasts more than 350 chapters in the country alone, 250 in the Philippines and also 1 in Australia. Since APO started in 2013 at Furman University, we have met so many APO brothers in other chapters at Clemson, Wofford, and UGA.

What can I say, we can’t get enough of brotherhood.

Rush season may be over for now but hey, it’s something to consider for next year. Personally, I have met some of my closest friends in this fraternity at Furman and will always be grateful for the many wonderful opportunities it has brought to my life since I joined. But if you take anything away from this ridiculously long PSA message – it’s that I sincerely hope you consider joining because it will be the best decision you ever make in your four year career here.
