So You’re in a Triple: Rooming 101

Whenever I tell someone I’m in a triple, they all have the same reaction.  There face becomes contorted and they remark “ooh…how is that going?” like it’s a bad thing. However, living in a triple for me has been a great experience this past year.

When I first read my rooming assignment and saw that I was going to rooming with two other people when I had only asked for one, I was not pleased to say the least.  I considered everything that could go wrong: lack of space, being closer to one roommate than the other, and much more.  I thought it would be a disaster.  Turns out, I was pleasantly surprised.

For me, the rooming survey worked out great, I have two roommates Haley and Claire, and while we don’t always hang out that much outside of the room, we coexist great.  We really haven’t thought at all about anything this whole year.  They are more like my sisters than roommates, and it’s always great to run threw our days together at night. So if you’re worried about the rooming horror stories becoming a reality, I advise you not to sweat it, because while those things could happen, it’s usually pretty rare.

Also, living on the hall with a bunch of other freshman girls has made my freshman year here at Furman.  I think the bonding activities at the beginning of the year really helped us grow together as a family, something really unique to Furman that most schools don’t do.  My hall is full of amazing girls, and is home to some of my best friends.  We are all such a close knit group, and frequently will grab meals, watch movies, or just chill in a room together chatting for hours.  At the beginning of the year, our whole hall had a talent show.  Now that’s not something that happens everywhere you know.

All in all, my rooming experience has been great.  Just make sure to fill out your survey as truthfully as you can, and you will be a-okay.  Even if you do end up in a triple, they happen to be rather spacious, and that’s just two more best friends you’ll make. Try not to dwell on your rooming situation even doesn’t go very well, you don’t have to be best friends with them, all you gotta do is sleep at night and go on your separate things during the day.

This is an exciting time, get pumped for new friends and exciting experiences this upcoming year!

Recruitment Recap

img_3675

Earlier this month, I participated in Furman’s panhelenic recruitment process.  Let me tell you, when I say that, I am still shocked.  Coming into Furman, I was fully convinced that I would never, ever, be in a sorority.  Over my dead body would you catch me labeling myself and fitting into a cookie cutter mold of perfect blondes decked out in their Lily Pulitzer.

Furman greek life however, had me pleasantly surprised.  Greek life here at Furman is very different from typical greek life at big state schools.  Personally, I see it as much more genuine, full of girls who are down to earth and care about a lot more than just looks and money.  One sorority in particular, however, spoke volumes to me in this particular category.

Let’s start at day one: open house.  During this round, I was able to meet all the different sororities here at Furman, and let me tell you it was very tiring.  What I realized during this round though, was that there really isn’t such thing as a “bad” sorority here.  That is the great thing, there is somewhere for everyone, and you really can’t go wrong choosing any sorority.  They are all full of amazing, strong women who will welcome you with open arms.  It all just depends on which is the best fit for you.

I will say this with a preface.  Going through this process was probably one of the most stressful things I’ve experienced.  While it was amazing to find my home and become closer each round, it sucked to be cut from certain sororities, or watch other girls get cut.  I was constantly worried and stressed, never knowing if one day would be my last day at a particular sorority.

Second round was philanthropy round.  During this round, each sorority shared their philanthropies that they supported and raised money for.  During philanthropy round, there wasn’t really one sorority in particular that drew me in, but I got an overwhelming feeling that this was definitely something I wanted to be apart of.  The stories that were shared and the causes that are supported were all so beautiful, and it solidified for me for the first time that I really wanted to be apart of something like this. I think a lot of people overlook this aspect of sororities viewing just in a social aspect.  However, there is much more to these groups of women than partying and looking pretty.

Third round was very much so the solidifying moment for me, because it was during this round that I realized which sorority I wanted to be apart of more than anything.  That sorority was Chi Omega.  During this round, I spoke to two amazing women who made me realize that Chi O had everything I wanted in a sorority.  That day, I was asking each sorority I visited the same question “What made you chose y/n?”  Each woman I spoke to gave very similar answers, all very good and valid, but the two that I spoke to in Chi O gave me answers that were different from the others.  They talked about how they weren’t necessarily comfortable in Chi Omega, but would be pushed to become a better person, and how the group of women in Chi O were just so strong, individual, and powerful.

Fourth round was super stressful for me because deep down I knew exactly what I wanted, but I knew my friends were about to choose a different way.  At first, it was hard swallowing the fact that they would be going on without me, but in the end, I realized that if our friendship was as strong as I thought, we would be just fine.  At one point in the other sorority’s preference tea, I started to doubt my gut feeling about choosing Chi Omega.  However, upon walking into Chi O, I was convinced within the first 15 minutes that that was my home.  There were various speakers who spoke about not looking for the prettiest girls with the best hair or clothes, but the ones with the best hearts.  And that’s what I wanted.

In the end, I made the choice to go Chi Omega.  I strayed differently from my friends, but I don’t regret it at all.  I can already feel myself growing in a positive way, and I cannot wait to see what’s in store the next 3 years with Chi Omega as my home.

No matter what sorority you choose however, they all have one thing in common.  They are full of welcoming women who want you to be apart of your home.  Going through recruitment and pledging a sorority has been an amazing, and not to mention very stressful experience that I have thoroughly enjoyed.  Sororities are definitely a great place to find an amazing group of strong women to call your sisters.

Dear Highschool Self

Dear Emily,

You are probably sitting at your desk right now trying your best to stay focused in another boring history class.  I know how much you hate history.

Right now you are about to make probably one of the most influential decisions in your life.  Well, maybe not that big, but still pretty important.  Choosing a college is not something to take lightly.  It can make or break your experience, and a college experience is not something you will want to miss out on.  Now don’t stress to much, because I have faith that in the end, you’ll make the right decision.

What you really need to think about is where you feel most at home.  Where can you walk onto campus and see yourself going to classes, hanging out with friends, experiencing your best life possible?  Where do you feel warm and welcomed, where do you fit in?  Don’t let yourself get caught up in where your friends are going, be your own person and make your own story.

Go somewhere where you can be your weird, spunky self.  Go somewhere where you can do what you love.  You love art, don’t go somewhere where you can’t have that.  Where do you feel like you will be challenged?  Where can see yourself being pushed beyond your limits, making you only stronger in the end? If you don’t exactly feel comfortable, that’s ok.  You need somewhere where you can be pushed to become better. I wish you could only know how happy you are going to be with your choice.

You are going to meet amazing people you never would have thought existed.  You are going to make some of the best friends of your life.  And get this one, you are going to join a sorority.  Yes, I said it, you are going to be a sorority girl no matter how much you may fight me on this one.  You are going to join and you are going to fall in love with it.  There are some pretty amazing girls in the sorority you’ll join, you’ll want to be just like them and follow in their footsteps.

You are going to grow.  You will grow so much.  You will be thrown curveballs, you will become very stressed and overwhelmed at times.  It isn’t going to be easy.  But, because you made the right choice, you will love every minute of it no matter how hard it will get.  You will have to work your butt off, but it will be worth it.

So Emily, take this advice.  Follow your heart, listen to your gut, be your own person.  You never may know where life will lead you, but I can promise you this:  It will be pretty amazing.

Love,

Hometown: I was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina which is about 10 minutes outside of Charleston.  Home to breathtaking sunsets, long beach days, and some killer homemade southern cuisine, it’s definitely one of my favorite places.

Graduation year:  Four years more to go, 2020.  I am super stoked to see what the next few years hold for me here down the road.

Major:  As of now, I am planning on double majoring in studio art and communications.  I am not exactly positive what I want to do with this, perhaps work for a newspaper, do marketing, or even go on to get my masters in art education.  Life is crazy and holds countless upon countless opportunities.

What’s one student organization you’re apart of?

I am a part of the club swim team here at Furman and I really love it.  It has been a great way to not only stay in shape and be able to get in the water, but also meet some super cool people who share similar interests that I do.

What’s your favorite CLP you’ve attended?

Well, speaking from that I have only gone to two so far because I have only been here for less than a semester, I don’t think I have really found my favorite yet.  However, I am excited to go to the plays that count as a CLP since I find that those will be entertaining but also satisfy my credit.

What’re three things you couldn’t live without in your residence hall?

  1. I definitely could not live without candy. My roommates and I have tried to eliminate the candy, but my sweet tooth constantly leaves me craving more.  Reese’s are a personal favorite to have around.
  2. My fish Oscar. He traveled all the way here with me from home and he is still going strong.  I think he really enjoys it here and everyone always is super excited and surprised when they see him.
  3. My super amazing hall mates! Guys, Poteat is absolutely the best despite what other people tell you.  We are just like a huge family and everyone is always so sweet with a little bit of crazy.  You can never get tired of your family, which is why I can never get tired of them.

What is your favorite class you’re taking this semester?

My favorite class is probably my photography class.  It is all film based which is super challenging but also a lot of fun.  I could spend hours upon hours in that dark room which can be a good or bad thing.  It’s kind of a go figure that it would be my favorite since I am a photo geek, but even if you’re not, it is still a fun and really cool class to try out.

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon?

I am most likely wandering around campus or around town taking photos on a Saturday afternoon.  If I’m not doing photography, I love to go hiking or just hang out downtown with some of my best pals finding fun new places to eat and shop.

What part of Greenville feels most like home to you?

Downtown feels most like home to me.  Being from Charleston, downtown Greenville has vibes very similar to those back home in Charleston so it is like a little taste of home when I’m down there.  All the cute little coffee shops, boutiques, and ethnic eats remind me of walking along King Street back home.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

This year I am really just looking forward to overall stepping into the world of college and the whole experience.  I am excited about meeting new people and making new friends, as well as, even though I am super nervous, being on my own for once.  I am excited to see what college classes are like and I am also looking forward to rushing this upcoming winter.  I am really pumped to see what this whole year holds for me overall.belltower

Describe Furman in five words.

Furman in five words:

  • Fun: There is always something going on.  From inflatables on the lawn to a concert at the Amphitheatre, you can never expect to be bored here
  • Friendly: Everyone here is always super welcoming and has such a big heart. Have a problem printing in the library?  Don’t know who to sit with at lunch?  Not a problem.  The students and staff members are all one of a kind and never fail to make you feel at home.
  • Fruitful: Furman has so many options and opportunities to offer to students in terms of classes, study away programs, internships and so much more.  It is definitely a great place to explore the world around you and all it has to offer.
  • Focused: Furman is really set on getting you where you need to be and making sure that you have the best opportunities available to you.  All of the students as well are really driven and know exactly what they want.  They are ready to work hard to get themselves there, knowing how to find the right balance in everything while still keeping their eye on the ultimate goal.
  • First: Although I may be bit biased, I think that Furman is First. It is an amazing place to be, full of wonderful people and even better opportunities.  The campus is beautiful, and I love everything that it has to offer.  I wouldn’t want to spend the next four years anywhere else but here.

What’s your favorite meal served on campus?

I really enjoy with the dining hall has cheese quesadillas.  Cheese quesadilla with some salsa, little bit of sour cream, that’s the perfect meal.  I am a sucker for Mexican food.  I used to make them at home all the time, so I guess you could say it’s a little taste of home for me.

What’s the last song you listened to?
How I Want Ya by Thomas Thames.  This is a really good tune.  I really enjoy it when I’m working out because it’s got a nice pump up beat, but also is a lot of fun to jam out to in the car with your gal pals.

What’s a movie, book, or TV show we should all be watching?

Thrillers usually aren’t my cup of tea, but The Girl on the Train is a film full of wonder, despair, and tension that I would highly recommend.  While based off of a book, you don’t really need to have read it prior to seeing the film because it does a really good job of delivering a clear story in an interesting way.  If you really enjoy psychological thrillers with a bit of mystery and something to keep you on the edge of your seat, I would highly recommend the Girl on the Train.

If you were a gif, what gif would you be?

This is defintly a hard one, but I’d have to say this one of Rapunzel.  Not only is Tangled my all-time favorite movie, but I feel like I relate to Rapunzel on a personal level.  She’s always super all over the place and very excited, nervous, and giddy all at once and I feel like that’s me a lot of the time.  She’s just a free spirit like me.
