Read and Explore with OLLI 2019 Our read this year is The Last Castle, the fascinating true story behind Biltmore, the magnificent gilded age mansion and the grandest residence ever built in the United States. It is also the story of George and Edith Vanderbilt and their remarkable team that constructed the house and grounds, the Vanderbilt family that guided the Biltmore Estate through the depression years and the efforts to preserve the legacy of George Vanderbilt. Denise Kiernan, Asheville resident and bestselling author of The Girls of Atomic City, provides a well-researched and captivating book. ***OLLI has purchased 150 copies of this year’s selection. Chautauqua History Alive presents a private OLLI performance of Napoleon, on Saturday, February 2 at 4 p.m. at the Herring Center. No military figure in history has been quite as polarizing as Napoleon Bonaparte. Was he a monster, driven by an endless, ruinous quest for military glory? Or a social and political visionary brought down by petty, reactionary kings of Europe? Mark Schneider, a historical interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg, will help us find the answers. With an uncanny resemblance to Napoleon, Mark has performed as the emperor around the world – we are in for a treat! An OLLI Social precedes show. Tickets are $5 and are available with check or cash in the OLLI office.
