The OLLI Office is open 8:30-5 Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays.  Our number is 864-294-2998.

 

Summer registration begins Tuesday, May 2 at 8 a.m. for everyone. The summer flyer is available on the website. No papers copies were mailed, but they are available in the office. Pick one up, and a few more to share with friends and neighbors. Make sure you go online to try out your USER NAME AND PASSWORD so that login will be smooth when you are ready to register. In preparation, if you need registration help, stop by the Computer Lab (HC104) on Monday, May 1 from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.  Summer is a great time for people to try OLLI for the first time. Classes are just $35 (unless noted) and there is no membership requirement. A great time to encourage a friend to try out OLLI!

 

It’s been a homerun year at OLLI and now it’s time to celebrate OLLI at our annual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 23 at the Younts Center. Doors open at 11:30 for fellowship at the pavilion next door (cash bar available).  Enjoy a buffet lunch at noon including Arugula and Watermelon Salad, Grilled Corn and Heirloom Tomato with Vidalia Onion Vinaigrette, BBQ Baked Beans, Cheesy Potatoes, Pulled Pork or Pulled Chicken Sliders and a sweet treat!  Congratulate the new Volunteer of the Year, elect OLLI Council members, and visit with OLLI friends old and new. It so happens that OLLI Council President, Margaret Clark, is OLLI’s number one baseball fan. Dress is casual and all are encouraged to embrace the baseball theme! TRAVEL WITH OLLI

 

In the Heart of Europe: The Czech Republic  We are delighted to announce that Furman professor Michael Svec, Dr. Svec is offering an opportunity for OLLI members to travel to the Czech Republic this September 4-13, 2017. Immerse yourself in Prague, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia. This travel program allows you to come to know the Czech Republic in a more intimate way. Walk the same streets as Holy Roman emperors, saints, writers, composers, scientists, and occupying armies. Take time to enjoy some of the best beer in the world on the shores of the Vltava River listening to Smetana’s ode to that very river. Breathe in a millennium of culture, architecture, history, and music. The trip includes exploring the countryside of Southern Bohemia with overnight stay in Cesky Krumlov, one of Europe’s most picturesque towns and an UNESCO World Heritage Site.​

The Community Volunteer SIG offers OLLI members more than 40 opportunities to engage within the Greenville community. Join us on Thursday, May 4, 12:20 – 1:20 p.m., HC004 for a focus on Greenville Free Medical Clinic and Paris Mountain State Park Friends. Also, on May 11, 12:20 – 1:20 p.m., HC004 we will feature a new Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club program. Contact Tom Nowlin with questions.

 

Boys and Girls – Moms and Dads. On Wednesday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m. there will be an organizational meeting in HC111 to assess the interest in developing an OLLI SIG Drum Circle. So, if you found your groove at last February’s “Rhythm Interactive Drumming Circle” Bonus Event and you don’t want to lose it or have always wanted a way to release your inner drummer and become that child of the 60’s again, then join us and let’s see if we can make it happen. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

 

Furman will hold its graduation exercises on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Paladin Stadium. Among the graduates will be OLLI student worker, Laken Weaver.  Stop by the OLLI office and help us congratulate Laken on her distinguished achievement. Fortunately, we will have Laken through the summer term!

 

What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

 

Greater Greenville Master Gardeners Plant Sale will be held Saturday, April 29 from 8 a.m.—1 p.m. at Jeff Lynch Appliance & TV Center (17 Roper Mountain Road, Greenville.) Rain or Shine! Arriving early is recommended.

 

The Greenville Chorale, conducted by OLLI instructor Bing Vick, presents a concert of great American secular music, Slice of American Pie, on Sunday, April 30, 3:00 p.m. at Taylors First Baptist Church. Beautiful folksongs, stirring hymn-tunes, spirituals, gospel music, Barbershop harmony, and selections from the “Great American Songbook” (20’s, 30’s, 40’s). OLLI members get 20% discount ($30 ticket for $24) on tickets in the OLLI Office.

 

Music on Sunday at the Temple of Israel, April 30, 3 p.m.:  The Swannanoa Festival Trio will perform, featuring Inessa Zaretsky, with a complimentary wine and cheese reception to follow. Visit their website for more information.
