What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service whereby Furman University students, faculty, and staff can borrow books, DVDs, and audiobooks that are owned by other libraries. Journal articles may also be requested through ILL and will be delivered in print or electronically to your ILLiad account. ILL services are free. But, you are responsible for overdue fees. So watch out!
What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad can be thought of as an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database.
How long does Interlibrary Loan usually take?
- Articles that are delivered electronically – about 3 days or sooner.
- Books and other ‘lendables’ that are delivered via postal service may take longer – 5 or more days.
Keep in mind, a lot of factors can impact delivery time such as the rarity of the item and the location of the libraries that have the item. We borrow items from Europe, Asia and other locations worldwide.
Can I order anything?
We will try to get whatever you need. The rarer the item, the harder it is to find a library that is willing to lend, but we try! Archival items are hardly ever lent through Interlibrary Loan, but we will ask for photocopies or scans.
What happens if I lose an item I borrowed through Interlibrary Loan?
If you lose or damage an ILL item, you are responsible for the cost of the item plus processing fees. Library charges not paid are referred to the Business Office for collection.
Can I renew an item borrowed through Interlibrary Loan?
Renewals of borrowed items are at the discretion of the lending library.
Steps to Renew:
- Logon to your ILLiad account.
- Under the “View” option of the Main menu, go to the “View/Renew Checked Out Items.”
- Double click on the transaction number of the item for which you would like to request a renewal.
You may submit renewal requests within a 7-day window prior to the due date. Renewal requests may also be submitted until 3 days after the due date.
