Digital Collections Center Guidelines for Converting VHS to Digital Format
Faculty may work with the Digital Collections Center to convert the content of VHS tapes into digital format. This digital content may then be burned onto a DVD. These projects are taken on by the Digital Collections Center as time and resources permit. Faculty who wish to digitize their own materials are encouraged to contact the StudioLab.
The Digital Collections Center may only convert VHS into digital format under the following conditions:
1. If the VHS is part of Special Collections and Archives and/or Furman University holds the copyright, the Digital Collections Center may convert the VHS to digital format. VHS versions of Furman produced or related films may be retained in Special Collections and Archives for preservation purposes.
2. If the Library has written consent from the copyright holder, the Digital Collections Center may convert the VHS to digital format for inclusion in one of the Library’s digital collections. This is true for both commercially produced and personal VHS.
3. If the VHS is part of the Library’s collection, but is not currently available either in streaming video or in DVD, the Library may choose to convert the VHS to DVD or other digital format. Once this conversion is made, the VHS must be withdrawn from circulation.
o If the Library has written permission from the copyright holder, the DVD may circulate normally.
o If the Library does not have written permission from the copyright holder, the DVD must only be used within the Library premises.
The Digital Collections Center will not convert VHS for Furman academic departments or faculty members who currently own and use VHS for educational purposes. However, academic departments and faculty are encouraged to contact the Library who will work with them to see if a DVD or streaming version of the VHS content is available for purchase. If so, the Library will purchase this copy and add it to their collection.
The Digital Collections Center provides advice and assistance to faculty in the development of digital collections or the management of digital projects. Please contact Christy Allen to learn more.
