Lucky Layers: The Tradition of Dressing Up Charlie

The Charlie Peace bust is decorating with layers of hats, a mask, and floaties.

If you’ve gone down the main stairway into our atrium, you’ve probably noticed the most fashion-forward figure on campus. It’s the memorial bust of Charlie Peace, the namesake of the Charlie Peace Wing. There is a long-standing tradition of dressing the bust in quirky outfits, everything from a Batman mask and cowboy hat to fuzzy earmuffs and oversized sunglasses.

Legend has it that when a student adds an article of clothing, or “lucky layer,” to the Charlie Peace bust, it will bring good fortune on their exams. In the early days, students brought items of their own to adorn Charlie, but now there is a basket full of extraordinary stuff conveniently placed behind the statue in case a last-minute studying student is short on time and must rush from the library straight to their exam.

Whether you believe in exam magic or just enjoy the creativity, Charlie’s evolving wardrobe is a whimsical reminder that even during stressful times, our Furman students can have a sense of humor.

Be sure to admire Charlie Peace’s latest ensemble the next time you’re in the library, and if you’re a student, it might be something to consider with final exams approaching.
