On the morning of July 1st, a ruptured water pipe caused significant damage in the lower level of the James B. Duke Library. The public areas most heavily affected include the student carrels between the Digital Collections Center and the Bound Periodicals. Library staff space accessed through the Multimedia Commons also experienced significant damage.
Clean up will continue over several days and into next week. Please avoid the affected areas during clean up. Also, please be aware that the vacuums, de-humidifiers, and other machinery used to clean up the water are quite loud and may prove disruptive to studying in certain areas of the lower level of the Duke Library. We apologize for the noise and inconvenience.
Thanks to our fast acting library faculty, staff, and students who pitched in to help contain the flooding. And many thanks to Furman’s Facilities staff who quickly responded to the emergency.
