Every summer, the people who work for and in the Furman Libraries enjoy a fun break on Wednesday afternoons at 3pm. They gather on the front porch, sharing snacks, laughs, and conversation. This tradition, known as “Wonderful Wednesday”, started over 20 years ago, and has been an essential part of the library’s culture ever since.
To the casual observer, it might look like an impromptu party, but it’s rooted in something much more meaningful — the need to connect. Furman’s vision statement talks about cultivating a welcoming environment, and its values are grounded in building meaningful relationships, in “fostering a culture of encouragement, enrichment, creativity, and fun”, and in appreciating “the authentic, empathic, and open interactions we have with each other.” Wonderful Wednesdays exemplify those values.
Next time you happen to be passing Duke Library on a Wednesday at 3pm, stop on by, grab a snack, and sit for a spell. We’d love to see you!
