The Case of the Mysterious Doughnut

Stuffed Sherlock Holmes toy looks through magnifying glass at half-eaten donut on roof

Employees of the James B. Duke Library at Furman University were met with a shocking surprise on Friday morning. A doughnut topped with chocolate fudge frosting and rainbow sprinkles was propped against the outside of a window overlooking the library’s roof.

Onlookers were baffled by the half-eaten confection. Who placed the doughnut there? How did it get onto the roof? Was it a mischievous squirrel? An enterprising crow? Or Homer Simpson showering doughnuts from the sky?

This head-scratcher required an expert investigator. Librarian Christy Allen called in her special friend, Sherlock Holmes, the world’s most famous private consulting detective to investigate. The Great Detective conducted a careful investigation and employed his deductive reasoning, but all to no avail. “Data! data! data!” he cried impatiently. “I can’t make bricks without clay.” Presumably, he needs more clues before he can solve the case.

Witnesses or anyone with information on the mysterious appearance of the doughnut are welcome to contact the library. In the meantime, curious investigators may see the doughnut for themselves. It’s located on the stairwell near the main elevator of the Duke Library between the first and second floor.

Once you’ve had a taste of a good mystery like this, little else will provide satiety.
