Furman authors who wish to publish Open Access now have more options thanks to transformative agreements. Open Access (OA) scholarship is free, online, and has fewer rights restrictions. However, OA comes at a cost. In most cases, authors pay thousands of dollars to publishers so that their scholarship can be OA.
Transformative agreements shift this payment away from authors. The Furman Libraries currently pay for several transformative agreements which allow for free OA publishing by Furman authors. The agreements also provide access to subscription-only content.
Furman currently has the following Transformative Agreements
- American Chemical Society Read + Publish
- Company of Biologists – Read & Publish
- Wiley Read & Publish
- Springer Nature Read and Publish
- Association for Computing Machinery Open (starting by the end of the year)
Participating in a transformative agreement is very simple. During the submission and/or acceptance process, the publisher will notify the author if they qualify for free OA publishing under the terms of the transformative agreement. If so, the author pays no money out-of-pocket to publish Open Access. It is a simple process that has already saved Furman authors over $24,000.
