Jeffrey Makala Gives Lecture at Rare Book School

Associate Director for Special Collections and University Archivist Jeff Makala gave the 2023 Kenneth Karmiole Lecture in the History of the Book Trades at Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in July 2023. Titled “The Lives (and Afterlives) of Stereotype Plates in the 19th Century United States Booktrade,” the talk was based on parts of his latest book Publishing Plates: Stereotyping and Electrotyping in Nineteenth-Century United States Print Culture, which has just appeared in paperback from Penn State University Press. Having first attended Rare Book School in 1999 and been a Friend of RBS for many years, coming back as a guest lecturer was a career highlight for Makala. The full talk is available on the Rare Book School YouTube channel.
